UNITE BERNARD NELSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLASP.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, BERNARD NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin clasps, which I have devised for use, more particularly, as a garment-clasp and especially as a clasp adapted to be readily and separably fastened to the tab commonly provided on corset and other waists of women and children for connecting with it, through the medium of a safety-pin, a garter-strap. In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a broken view in front elevation of a section of a corset-waist, showing the bandportion provided with one form of tab to which my clasp is applicable; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clasp; Fig. 3 shows the clasp by a face view, operatively applied to the tab of Fig. 1, and with a garter connected with it by a safety-pin, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on line 4, Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view like that presented in Fig. 1, but showing another form of tab to which the clasp is applicable through the medium of a buckle adjunct; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the clasp with the buckle extending from it, and Fig. 7 shows the buckle applied to the tab of Fig. 5 with a garter fastened to the clasp by a safety-pin.
Various means known to me are in general use for fastening a garter-strap 8 to the band-portion 9 of a waist 10, including a tab 11 sewed on the band to depend therefrom and adapted to have fastened to it a safety-pin 12 on one end of the garter-strap. One form of such tab is that shown in Fig. 1, to be provided in its lower end with a pair of horizontally alining eyelets 13 through which to insert the safety-pin. Another form is that shown in Fig. 5. Still other forms, which are not herein shown, are loops carrying permanently in them different kinds of metal devices provided with eyes through which to insert the safety-pin on a garter-strap; but such devices are objectionable not only because they rust in washing the garments but are pulled askew in wearing, as are all the forms referred to, including the safety-pin passed through eyelets in the tab, and thus tend to produce discomfort to the user by pressure and working against the flesh. These and other ob- Speccaton of Letters Patent.

jections are entirely overcome by my improvement.
The claspv 14 is a frame 15 shown in its preferred oblong rectangular shape with the opening in it of corresponding sha-pe, and
it has hinged to one end a bar 16, adapted to extend along the opening at one side of the frame, this bar carrying alining eyes 17 to project through the frame-opening to the opposite side;
The clasp 14 in the form thereof presented in Figs. Q to 4 inclusive is especially designed for use with the tab illustrated in Fig. 1, by embracing it between the claspframe and hinged bar in a manner to pass the eyes 17 through the eyelets 13 and insert the pin-member of a safety-pin 12 through the projecting ends of the eyes to fasten the bar, as represented in Figs. 2, 3
and 4, and separably connect a strap 8 (as a garter-strap) provided with the safetypin, with the tab. One of the eyes 17 is shown to be reciprocably confined in a slot 18 in the hinged bar to adapt it to be adjusted back and forth relative to the other eye for the purpose of registering the eyes with eyelets 18 more or less widely separated on different tabs provided with them.
In Figs. 6 and 7 my improved claspis illustrated as part of a buckle 19, which may be of the construction shown or of any other suitable construction. This embodiment of luy-invention is especially designed for use with the form of tab illustrated in Fig. 5 by fastening, in a usual manner, the buckle to it, thus leaving pendent the clasp-member of the device to permit a strap 8 to be fastened to it through the medium of a safetypin thereon, by adjusting the hinged bar, 16 on the clasp-frame to project through the frame-opening the eyes, and passing through the latter the pin-member of the safety-pin, as illustrated in Fig. 7.
As will readily be seen, by clasp, when used in the particular connection illustrated and for the 4purpose described, .presents among its advantages those of being readily attachable to and detachable from any of different makes of waists, affording to the garter-pin 12 firm attachment without tendency to injure the waist, as by tearing the waist-band, and further affording lightness and durability, and also permanency of position whereby all tendency to stick into the esh of the user and resultant discomfort are avoided.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Y l. A clasp comprising a frame With a hinged bar to extend on one side of the frame at its opening and provided With alining eyes to project through said opening at the opposite side of the frame and receive the pin-member of a safety-pin.
2. A clasp comprising a frame With a hinged bar to extend on one side of the frame at its opening and provided on its inner face with relatively adjustable alining eyes to project through said opening at the opposite side of the frame and receive the pin-member of a safety-pin.
3. A clasp comprising a frame With a slotted hinged bar to extend on one side of the frame at its opening and provided With a fixed eyev on its inner face and With an i eye reciprocably confined in the bar-slot to aline With the fixed eye, said eyes projecting through the frame-opening When the clasp is closed to receive the pin-member of a Y said opening at the Vopposite side yof the l frame and receive the pin Inernber of a safety-pin, and a buckle extending from said fra-lne.
