UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR W. WADSWORTH AND ARTHUR P. CONANT, OF FOR-T THOMAS, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNORS TO THE WADSWORTH WATCH CASE COMPANY, OF DAYTON, KENTUCKY,
A CORPORATION OF KENTUCKY.
HOLDING MEANS FOR DETACHABLE STRAPS.
Application filed August 8, 1923. Serial No. 655,498.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTH R TV. VVADS- WORTH and ARTHUR P. CoNAN'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Fort Thomas, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holding Means for Detachable Straps, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to lugs for wrist or strap-watches and buckles.
The object of our invention is to provide simple, compact, economical, efficient, strong and easily attachable and d etachable'meansv for securing a strap to a wrist or strapwatch or buckle and to so construct and arrange said means as tobe substantially concealed or invisible when in use.
Our invention consists in providing a watch-case or buckle with a substantially T-shaped lug adapted to be inserted through a slot into a loop on the end of the strap whereby the strap is detachably secured to said watch or buckle, as the case may be.
Our invention also consists in the con struction, combination and arrangement of the lug and of the strap as herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawing: I
Fig. l is a plan view of a wrist watch and strap embodying our invention;
Fig. 2 is a view of the under side thereof;
Fig. 3 is a section of the watchcase and strap holding lugs;
Fig. 4 is a view of the under side of the looped end of the strap;
Fig. 5 is a front view of a watchcase embodymg our invention showing the strap dotted at the right side andthe upper part 40 of the loop broken away on the left side;
Fig. 6 is a plan view'showing our invention applied to another form of watchcase;
Fig. '7 is an edge View thereof;
Fig. 8 is an end View thereof;
Fig. 9 is a side view of one of the lugs;
Fig. 10 is a rear view of said lug;
Fig. 11 is a plan view of a buckle having our lug applied thereto; and
Fig. 12 is a side view thereof with the 50 looped end of the strap in section.
In the embodiment of our invention as illustrated and which shows preferred constructions we provide a substantially T- shaped lug which is constructed of substantially the shape shown in Figs. 9 and 10. As shown, said lug is provided with a strap holding head or bar 1 having curved edge 2 and straight edge 3 forming curved or ta pered ends 4-. Said head or bar is supported and spaced apart from the watchcase 5 or buckle 6, as the case may be, by base 7 con- I nected to supporting stem 8 which fits into a socket or opening 9 in the watchcase or buckle to which it is secured by riveting, soldering or otherwise, as desired, or if pre ferred it may be formed integral therewith as shown in Figs. 11 and 12. The shoulder 10 at the junction of the base and stemserves to firmly brace and support'the stem and to hold the head in fixed spaced apart relation from the watchcase or buckle thereby forming spaces 11 between the head or watchcase and buckle to receive the looped end-12 of strap 13 therebetween. The flat side 30f the T bar 1 is spaced from the watchcase or buckle preferably a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the material comprising one pl of the belt thereby permitting the loope end 12 to completely fill the spaces 11 and concealing the lug. The strap is formed by folding a strip of leather or other equivalent material upon itself and sewing the edges 14 together except at the looped end 12. Said strap is provided upon its under ply 15 adjacent the looped end with a longitudinal slot 16 through which the head 1 is inserted into holding position in the. loop. The slot 16 is preferably cut away or enlarged at 16 adjacent the loop 12 to receive the base 7 and to provide for a neat, snug and compact fit and arrangement of the parts relative to each other and to the watchcase or buckle. It also provides for more ready insertion than otherwise, of the head into the loop. The base is also preferably formed at an angle to the edge of the watchcase o1- buckle to which it is attached in order that the looped end of the strap and the top of the watchcase or buckle will be substantially flush and assist in formingpart of the curve or circle of the strap l i hen the parts are thus constructed the operation of attaching and detaching when desired is very simple and convenient. To attach merely place the head longitudinally of the slot, insert one end thereof beneath the end of the slot until the base engages the a quarter cure by Letters Patent is:
1. in detachable holding means, a E -lug suitably mounted and spaced apart from the article to which it is attached, and loop-er strap having a slot therein whereby said lug may be detachably connected to said loop.
2. In detachable holding n'ieans, a T-lu; suitably mounted and spaced apart from the article to which it is attached, and a looped strap having a longitudinal slot entei'idim; trom the loop longitudinally of the strap, substantially as set forth and or the pp poses specified.
3. In combination with a watchcasr buckle, detachable holding means comprising a transverse bar spaced apart from at .l supported by said watchcase or buckle, an T a strap having a loop and adjacent slot whereby said bar may be inserted into said loop or detached therefrom, when ClQSli a. In detachable holding means, a lug con'iprising a transverse bar, a base and stem, means for securing said stem to an object with said bar in spaced apart relation :trom said object, a strap having a loop in one end and hat a slot in its under sitending from the looped end suficiently to permit the insertion oi said bar there through into said loop.
l'ln detachable holding means, a lug suitably mounted and having a cross-bar curved upon one edge and straight upon its inner edge and spaced apart troin the object to which it is attached, and a strap having a slot and loop to detachably receive said lug.
6. In combination with a vmtchcase or buckle, a lug l aving a cross-bar and having a shank thereon secured to said watchcase or buckle an angle thereto and a looped strap having means whereby said cross-bar may be inserted into detachable holding engagcn'ient therewith.
'i'. A watchcase or buckle, a lug comprising a bar having tapered ends and a stem whereby said hi5; is secured to the watchcase or buckle in combination with a strap hav a loop and slot whereby said lug and rap may be detachably connected.
8. In a device of the class described, a lug comprising a shank having a stem, a crossbar curved on its edge away from said stem and straight on its edge adjacei'it said stein. and a base forming a connection iJQtWt said cross-bar and stem and having a shoulder adjacent said stem, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
