Application July 14, 1939', Serial No; 284,518
2 Claims. ('01. 421-434) This invention relates generally to supporting or attaching means for ornaments and has as one of its objects the provision of complementary means, for removably supporting or attaching a conventional ornamental pin or brooch to an article of wearing apparel, such as, a handbag, shoe, glove, hat or belt.
It is another object of this invention to provide means whereby a woman may utilize a brooch or pin as an ornamentation upon articles, other than that of a dress; blouse, coat, etc., upon which it is conventionally worn. This will be especially the case when the wearer finds it impractical, for certain reasons, to use the brooch or pin for its intended conventional purpose, but for sentimental reasons would desire to. display or wear the same on. other articles which she wears or carries with her.
It is, therefore, a further object of the invention to provide means on the lock or catch of a handbag, or on a shoe, hat, belt, glove or the like, complementary with or to means on a brooch or ornamental pin for supporting the latter on the former, thus enabling the brooch to be selectively worn on the person of the wearer or as an ornament for the article to which it is applied.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following disclosure thereof, it being understood, however, that it is not intended that the invention be limited to the same, but is to embrace such modifications and changes which may come within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of an ornamental pin or brooch showing the pin in open position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a ladys handbag having a lever lock embodying the invention, the lock being shown in open position;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the brooch attached to the lock in conformity with the invention, the lock being seen in closed position;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a ladys glove showing the invention applied thereto;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a ladys hat showing the invention applied thereto;
Figs. 6 and '7 are perspective views of a ladys shoe incorporating the invention;
Fig. 8 is a top plan view of a tubular element employed in the invention;
Fig. 9 is a front elevational view showing a brooch attached to a belt embodying the invention;
Fig.1 0is a side elevational view of Fig. 9.
Fig. 11 is a perspective view of a brooch'attaohingv tube, as for example, that employable in a belt attachment;
Figs. 12 and 13 are perspective views of a lady's handbag with a lever lock; incorporating the invention in a modified form;
Fig. 14 is a detail view (part or it in section) of the ornamental pin-engaging member;
Fig. 15 is a rear view of an ornamental pin employable in the invention in a modified form;
Fig. 16 is a detail view (part of it in section) ofthe lever lock and ornamental pin, incorporating the invention in the modified tormj Fig. 17 is a sectional view taken along line l'l-l'l' of Fig. 16.
Referring now to the drawings and particular- 1y to Figs. 1-1 1, the-brooch I5 which may be of conventional design comprises the body E6, the pin [1 which is hinged at l8 to the body, and the safety catch IS.
The numeral 22 indicates the tongue portion of a lever lock carried by the ladys handbag 2|. On the underface of tongue portion 22 of the look there is provided a tubular or loop member or sleeve 20 for receiving the pin portion ll of the brooch l5 as clearly seen in Fig. 3. This tube 20 may be secured to the lock lever in any suitable manner, as for example by a soldering or welding operation, or it may be struck out of 'the material forming the tongue portion 22 of the lock lever. It is understood that the pin holding sleeve or tube 20 may be positioned at the top or upper surface of the portion 22. The free end of the pin I! after being passed through the sleeve 20 is locked to the safety catch l9 in a conventional manner. Thus the ornamental pin l5 may be applied to the lock of a ladys handbag to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the latter, and when desired it may be removed and worn on the person as a brooch. A person may have an ornamental pin or brooch enshrouded in a deep sentiment or a sweet remembrance, but may not desire to utilize it for its original purpose, namely, for instance, to-be carried on the blouse, dress or suit. By this invention such ornamental pin or brooch may be put to a useful purpose such as just described or further on described with reference to other articles worn by the person.
Fig. 4 shows the application of the invention to a glove 25, wherein the pin-holding tube or sleeve 26 may be applied directly torthe glove, or to a strap 21. Tube 26 is shown as being applied to the underface of the strap 21, it being understood, however, that the same may be fixed to the top face of the strap in the same manner as that illustrated in Fig. 5; this figure showing a lady's hat having a hat band 3| to which is applied the sleeve or tube 32 carrying the brooch l5.
In the application of the invention to a ladys shoe 33 (Figs. 6 and 7) the sleeve or tube 20 may be provided with a pair .of prongs 35, which are forced through the top leather 36 of the shoe and then bent over as indicated at In this manner of attaching tube 20', a separate piece of lining 31 should be provided to protect the wearer's foot from the bent in Fig. 6.
The brooch also may be applied to a belt 40- as illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10. The belt shown in these figures comprises two layers 4|, 42, between which fianges 43, 44 of the sleeve or tube 45 are positioned. Perforations 46 are provided for the passage of stitches 4'! to secure the tube 45 in place. In this form, slots 48 permit the flanges 43, 44 to pass through the top layer 4| of the belt.
Figs. 12-16 show the invention applied in a modified form. In this case the tongue portion 50 of the lock lever 5| attached to the ladys handbag 2|, is made substantially in theshape of a U, preferably having the free end-portions 52 of its legs 53 wider than the remaining portions 54 thereof. The brooch or ornamental pin 55 is provided with the conventional pin stem 56 hinged at 51 and safety catch 58; and the brooch is further provided with a pair of loops or channels 59 for engagement with'the legs 53 as clearly shown in Figs. 16 and 17. This engagement secures the brooch 55 to the lock lever tongue 50. In adjusting the brooch to tongue 50, the loops or channels .59 are forced or sprung prongs 38 as shown past the widened portions 52 of the tongue legs 53 into engagement with the slightly narrower portions 54 of the legs 53.
While I have described what seems now to be the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is conceivable that various modifications in the configuration, composition and disposition of the component elements going to make up my invention as a whole, as well as in the selective combination and application of the respective elements, may occur to those skilled in the art, and no limitation is intended by the phraseology of the foregoing description and illustrations in the accompanying drawings.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination an ornament, a pin pivotally connected at one of its ends to saidornament, a substantially tubular member removably receiving said pin through the tubular portion thereof,the other end of said pin projecting from said tubular portion, and means on said ornament and engageable with the projecting end of said pin for preventing unintentional withdrawal of said ornament from said member, said member having means for attachment thereof to an article of wearing apparel.
2. The combination with an ornament having a pin pivotally connected at one of its ends to said ornament and a safety catch secured to said ornament, of a member having a loop portion for removably receiving said pin with the other end of the latter projecting therefrom and engageable with said catch, said member having means for attachment thereof to an article of wearing pin in look-
