Claims. 1

This invention, which relates generally to wemens hosiery, has as its principal object the provision of means for embellishing the hose in the region of its upper heel portion through the use of detachable ornaments of various designs and effects, the selected ornament being fixed to the hose just above the heel of the shoe.

Other objects, purposes and advantages of the present invention will be apparent more fully hereinafter, it being understood that the present invention consists substantially in the combination, construction, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, as shown in the accompanying drawings and as finally pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Figures 1 to 4 thereof, it will be observed that the stocking of the present invention, designated generally by the reference numeral Ill is of conventional construction having the usual Welt H and the usual reinforced toe and heel portions l2 and [3. Also, in accordance with conventional practice, the stocking is is provided with a rear seam M, which may be a true seam in the case of full-fashioned stockings and a mock seam in the case of seamless or circular knit stockings.

Secured in the leg seam of the stocking, preferably at a point just above the reinforced high spliced portion of the heel I3, is a loop I5 formed of a narrow tape of fabric folded upon itself as shown in Figure 3, the inner free edges of the folded tape being incorporated into the seam l4 during the operation of stitching the seam. The loop-forming tape is so incorporated into the seam of the stocking as to present the eye of the loop l5 as closely as possible to the finished outer surface of the stocking, the axis of the eye of the loop being thus parallel to and closely adjacent the leg seam l4. Preferably, the fabric of which the loop I5 is formed is of non-stretch characteristic.

The width of the loop-forming tape preferably measures 7%" and may vary from /4" to /2 to provide a loop having an eye of an axial length adequate to maintain the shank of a clip member, to be presently described, substantially parallel to the line of the stocking seam 14, the diameter of the loop eye being only large enough to snugly receive the shank of the clip member. Preferably, the material of which the loop 15 is formed is such that when the stocking of the present invention is dyed and finished the loop is so inconspicuous that the stocking may be worn even without any of the accessory ornaments designed to be supported by the loop.

Figures 7 and 9 show two difierent designs of ornamental accessories which may be fitted upon the stocking of the present invention to embellish the stocking in the region of its upper heel portion, these accessories being distinguished generally by the reference numerals l6 and [6a. It will be understood, of course, that an infinite variety of ornaments may be devised to be Worn with the present stockings, and that accordingly, it is not intended to limit the present invention to the use of any particular design of ornamental accessory for the stocking. In all cases, however, the ornamental accessories are each provided with a more or less rigid mounting support or clip for facilitating removable attachment of the accessory upon the stocking. Figures 5 and 6 illustrate one form of such mounting clip, while Figures 10 and 11 illustrate another form thereof.

What is claimed as new and useful is: 1. As a new article of manufacture, a stocking having a longitudinally extending closed rear seam, and an open-ended loop disposed out- 'wardly of the seam with the axis of its eye closely adjacent andparallel to the line of the seam, said loop being formed of a fabric tape folded upon itself and having its overlapping terminfllehds incorporated within the body of the closed seam.
