G. H. BREWER REIN GUIDE `Filed Jan. 8. 1924 Patented Aug. 5, 1924.
Q F E? l C E GID H. BREWER, or" wITTs SPRINGS, ARKANSAS.
nEIN GUIDE.
applicati@ filed January s, 1924. serial No. 685,008.
To all whom it may concern.' Y
Be it known that I, GID H. BREWER', a citizenl of the United States, residing at lVitts Springs,` in the county of Searcy, State of Arkansas, have invented a new and vuseful Rein Guide; and I do hereby declare the following to 'be a full, clear,'a'nd exact description of the invention, such aswill enable othersslrilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
The inventionrelates to? rein guides for use on harness, preferably on the haines, and has for its object to provide a device of this character `for guiding a check rein -or the driving reins in aV manner whereby the rein will easily move and'will beguided between rollers, thereby preventing wear on the rein. Y
A further object is to form the guide from a U-shaped member havingv its arms vertically disposed and a member hingedly connected to the upper end of oneof the arms and detachably connected to the other arm. Also torprovide oppositely disposed rollers for engaging the opposite sides of a rein and guiding the same during the movementof the rein between the rollers.
A further object is to mount the lower roller on a transversely disposed shaft, and the. vertically disposedV rollers on L-shaped members, the lower ends of which are provided with eyes Vthrough whichV the lower shaft extends, and the upper ends with an gularly disposed arms extending into the arms of the U-shaped member., y
A further object is to provide the hinged member with spaced arms, between which arms a roller is rotatably mounted for en,
gaging the side of the rein.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes Vin the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing v Figure 1 is a front elevation of the guide showing the same applied to a hame.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectionahy view taken on line 3 3 of'Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a portion of a conventional form of haine, and 2 the U-shaped frame of the rein guide, which frame 2 is hingedly secured to the hame 1` by the eyes 3 carried by the frame and the eyes l carried by the hame. 5 in parallel relation to each other and hingedly connected "at 6 to the upper end ofone of the arms 5 is a; bar 7, which barisprovidedwith a springcatch 8 adapted-tof spring over-the shoulder 9 of the outer-'arm 5 for holding the bar 7 rigid. Bar 7-when in openposition as shown in dotted` lines"l in 'Figure 1 allows the rein 10-t'o be positioned between the rollers 11, where it willibe guided in a manner whereby the rein 10 will not be worn on the sides thereof, for the reason that during the -movement of the rein 10 it engages the rollers 11 which have a rolling contact with the ring, consequently friction is prevented.
Rollers 11 are rotatably mounted on verticallydisposed shafts 12, the lower ends of which are provided with eyes 13, and through the eyes the vhorizontally disposed shaft 14: extends which supports the roller 15, which engages the llower edge of the rein 10. Shaft 14 extends entirely through 4the varms 5 of the U-shaped member 2, and
not only forms a shaft on which the roller 15 rotates, but also forms supporting means for the lower ends of the shafts 12. The upper ends of the shafts 12 terminate in horizontally disposed arms 16, which arms are imbedded in the arms 5 of the U-shaped member 2, and rigidly support the shafts 12 and therollers 11 in positions where they will engage the sides of the rein 10 during lateral movement of the rein.
Rotatably mounted between the arms 17 of the hinged member 7 on a shaft 18 is a horizontally disposed roller 19, which roller is adapted to be engaged by the upper edge of the rein 10 upon an upward movement thereof for preventing wear or damage to the upper edge of the rein as it moves back and forth through the device. The arms 17 form means for preventing aXial displacement or movement of the roller 19 and at the same time engage the inner sides of the arms 5 of the U-shaped member and prevent inward bending thereof when the device is open.
From the above it will be seen that a rein guide is provided, wherein roller bearings Will engage the opposite Sides and edges Thev U-'shaped member 2 has its arms of the rein, thereby preventing Wearing of the rein incident to. movement, and the rein may be easily and quickly placed in the guide. Although the device has been described in connection With a rein or check rein, it is to be understood that the device may be used in connection with any movable piece of harness. Y
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is l. A rein guide comprising a U-shaped frame having its arms in parallel relation, a member pvoted to the end-oi` one or' said arms, a spring catch carried by the 'rce endV of said member and cooperating With arrecess in the end of the other arm, a horizontally disposed roller carried by said member, a shaft extending through the arms adjacenty their inner ends, a roller rotatably mounted on said shaft, and in parallel relationto the irst mentioned roller, shafts in parallel relation to the arms, one of the arms of said shafts being provided with arms through which the first mentioned shaft extends, the ends of the parallel ber being-provided `With a spring .catch cooperating With the end of the other arm of the Ufshaped member, a roller carried by the pivoted member, aroller carried by the transverseportion of the U-shaped mem-Y ber lin parallel relation to the irstV mentioned roller and rollers adjacent the inner sides f of the arms of the. U-shaped member4 Yin parallel relation to each apart. n n Y -Y In Vtestimony whereof I havesignedmy name to this specification in Athe presence of ytWo subscribing Witnesses.
