ABRAM L. ZENT, 0F ROANOKE, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 108,229, dated October 11, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER-CUTTING MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, ABRAM L. ZENT, of Roanoke, in the county 'of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented a valuable Improvement in Machines for Cutting Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the .construction and operation thereof, reference being had to Vthe annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is arepresentaton of a plan of my device;
Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof; and y .Figures 3, 4, and 5 are details.
- rlhe nature of my invention consists in constructing and arranging, in a novel manner, a series of devices, intended to serve as sufficient means for cutting the edges fromvstrips ot leather, the object being to prepare suitable filling for round or scmicircular straps, appcrtaining to harness and other like manufactures.
A ot' the drawing represents the base of a frame, of which the posts B form the vertical ends.
C represents a roeli-shaft, having its bearings in the posts B, as shown.
D represents a coiled spring, wound around the shaft C, and having its ends attached to the posts B, as shown.
E rcpresents'a handle fixed to shaft G, the use of which is hereinafter mentioned.
F F represent two pendent arms, attached to and arranged to swing ou the shaft C, in the lower ends of which I arrange the roller G.
I form slots 'n in the lower ends of arms F, respectively, and arrange therein sliding blocks r.
rlherollerC-lrhas its bearings in these sliding blocks.
lli represents a cross-har connecting the arms F F, Elli( l' K represents an elliptic spring, attached by its center to the lower side of cross-bar H, while each end rests upon a sliding block, lr.
By the means last above described, the roller G is permitted vto Ymove vertically in the pendent arms, and thereby adapt itself automatically to any inequalities in thickness ot' the leather strips that may `be passed thereunder.
By means of the handle E, the swinging frame (consisting of arms F, roller G, and cross-har H,) may be forced upward and out of the Way of the strips of leather as they are fed to the machine.
The letters s represent a series of slots constructed in the base-board, adapted to receive strips of leather of various widths; and
The letters e represent a series of bits or knives, each of whiclris alixed to the base-board, immedif ately overa slot, s, to the width of which it corresponds in length.
These bits are made removable and adjustable by means of' screws, that are passed through the slots y. By reason of this adjustability, the operator is enabled, not only to provide compensation for wear, but also to relieve the machine from choking, when the strips are being passed under the knives.
To operate my machine, a strip of leather, adapted to the width of the slot s, is placed in such slot, and drawn lengthwise under a knife, r.-
When the strips are being placed in their slots, the roller G is turned upward and out ofthe way; but as soon as the strips are in place, the roller is allowed to fall into place, and serves to hold the same in position by a rolling and yielding movement. p
Set-screws a' are arranged in the frame, as shown,
the points of which rest against arms F, respectively,4
for the purpose ot' aiding the operator in regulating the pressure of the roller upon the leather.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a leather-cutting machine, the roller G, when arranged in a swinging frame, and combined with the .spring K, sliding blocks r, and thumb-screwsw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
- 2. In combination with the roller G, arranged in a swinging fraaie, the removable and adjustable knives r, whenarrangcd with the slots s, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
