Description

PATENT RICHARD cnoeKEn, or MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER-CUTTING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,266, dated January 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD (income, of Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Leather-Gutters; and
t I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a transverse section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of one of my cutters.
This invention has relation to strap-cuttin g machines; and it consists, first, in serrating the sides of the rotary cutters in order that they may be held securely between the washers on the crank-shaft; secondly, in supporting the grooved roller by means of an adj ustable frame, so as to allow the former to be disengaged from the knives when the latter require adjustment and, thirdly, in so constructing that part of the frame which supports the outer end of the knife-shaft and the combs that part of a wide piece of leather may be allowed to project while the balance is being cut into straps, all as hereinafter more fully described.

One end of the shaft 1) has its bearing in a standard, E of the frame, the other end being centered in a depending plate, E of an L- shaped yoke, G, which has a slot cut in its upper end, fitting a tongue or shoulder, g, at the top of the standard E. A setscrew, H, enters said standard through this slot, and secures the yoke thereto. I designates combs or slotted plates designed to prevent the straps when out from winding around the cutter-shaft.
These combs are secured on either side of the shaft and to raised parts or shoulders K of the tables B, and are supported at their outer ends by the plate E which is constructed with socket into which studs projecting from the ends of the combs enter. L designates the grooved guiding-roller, the shaft M of which is supported by a frame, N, hinged at one endto the sides A, and at the other end upheld by an adjusting-screw, N, by turning which said frame and roller may be lowered or raised at pleasure.
WVhen the roller is lowered the grooves recede from the cutters, and allow of the latter being taken off or adjusted to out different widths of strap without the necessity of raisin g the cutter-shaft.
The projecting ends of the roller-shaft move through slots 0 0 cut in the frame sides A.
When it is desired to adjust or remove any of the cutters the yoke G may be taken off by loosening the set-screw H. The leather is fed to the cutters between the tables and combs. The space between the tables and the plate E is designed to allow part of a large sheet of leather to project while the remainder is being cut into strips.
The cutterand roller shafts are connected by means of gear-wheels]? P, which insures the revolution of the latter.
What I claim as new is 1. In a strap-cutting machine, the annular cutters 0 having their surfaces centrally serrated to prevent their turning on the shaft D, substantially as specified.
2. The yoke G secured to the standard E and constructed with the depending plate E supporting one end of the cutter-shaft D and the combs I, substantially as specified.
3. The grooved guiding-roller L, in combination with the adjustable frame N, the frame A, and the parallel rotating knives, substantially as specified.
