Description

JAMES w. NEAL.
Improvement in Straw Cutters.
Patented Aug. 9,1871.v
. vBTI:
PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. NEAL, OF BIG LIGK, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAW-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,636, dated August 29,1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. NEAL, of Big Lick, in the county of Roanoke and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw-Gutter; and do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a straw-cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view of my machine. Fig. 3 shows a section of the revolving wheel with adjustable cutter.
A represents the box, th rough which the straw passes, constructed in any desired manner. On top of the box A, at the front end, are two crossbars, B B, upon the center of which a shaft, C, has its bearings. Upon the outer end of this shaft is mounted a wheel, D, close to the front end ofthe box A, said wheel being provided with a crank, E, for turning the same. Upon the inner side of the Wheel D are attached one or more curved segmental cutters or knives, G G. Each of said knives or cutters is pivoted to the wheel at one end, and secured at the other end by a bolt, a, passing through a slot in the wheel, as shown in Fig. 3, by which means the cutter may be more easily managed in sharpening, and also extended as it is worn and adjusted for cutting line or coarse hay or corn-stalks. 0n the inner end of the shaft C is mounted an auger-wheel, H, the blades of which work in a corrugated roller, I, placed across the box A, whereby the articles to be cut are fed regularly and evenly to the cutters.
Havin g thus fully described my invention, what I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described straw-cutter, consisting of the box A, shaft C, disk D, crank E, adjustable cutters G, auger-wheel H, and roller I, when all of said parts are constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of June, 1871.
