Description

@einen faire gatent @frn S. H. NESBIT, OF MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS'ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES NESBIT, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 80,760, dated August 4, 1868.
IMPROVED QUILTING-IRAME.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that I, S. H. NESBIT, of Monmouth, Warren county, Illinois, have invented a new and improved Quilting-Frame; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention relates to so constructing a quilting-frame that one person may easilymanage the operation of adjusting Vand quilting anyarticle thereon, and so arranging it that it may be easily taken apart and set away when not in use.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and. use my invention, I will proceed to the following fuller and clearer description of its construction and operation. i
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the whole machine, with a quiltrstretched thereon.
Letters G G represent the two base-boards, from which are raised the uprights D.A
The uprights D bear or support, transversely on their upper ends, the pieces A A.
The device above described constitutes the main frame, and is held Ytogether or in position by the crosspiece I, when in use.- The cross-piece I mayA be attached to the ends of thev main frame by any convenient catch or joint, or it may be mortised through and wedged, -so that it may hold the frame firm while inwuse, and he easily taken out to set the frame away in a small space, when vnot in use. i
The roller E is passed through a hole in the piece A at one end, 'and thejournal at the other end is let into the bearing in the piece A, by way of the slot K, or it may be slotted at both ends, to provide in either case for putting the roller in or taking it out of place, while the frame is in position for work.
The rollers F and H are provided also with journals at either end, and means for placing in position, the same as roller E. i
The rollers F and E carry at one and the same end the pulleys e e, whichn are connected by means of the cord or hand- U U, for the purpose of transmitting the same motion to the one that is given to the other.
To one end of the roller H, I attach the pawl n, for the purpose'ot' holding it in place when the. quilt is drawn taut thereon.
Themanner of operating the above part of thc device is as follows: Y
The lining of the article to he quilted is wound on the roller F. The outside is wound on the roller H. The two ends of the quilt are then drawn back and attached to the roller E. The roller H is then rolled back to E, carrying thc upper material back and leaving the lining exposed for placing the cotton or other material in place. The roller H is then rolled back to its position, and may there be turned to drawing the material to the desired tension, and then held there by moans of the pawl n, until the whole is quilted, as desired. 'lhen` the part quilted may be wound on the roller E, and the same operation for wadding and quilting repeated.
To accommodate this frame to different widths of articles to be quilted, I provide the piece B, which is :attached to one of the picces'A by means of thc tape c e e, or cord, otherwise arranged, so that the piece B may be drawn closer, or the distance increased from the piece A. The piece D is attached to the quilt-lining by hooks or other device the lining is attached to the other side of the frame A by the hooks w w 'w w, and by ,the means of the two last arrangements thc lining may be stretched as desired.
Having thus described gny invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is
The rollers E F H, pulleys z, and cord U, and pawl n, in combination with the frame A D GI, constructed and arranged as described, and for the purpose set forth.
s. H. NEsBrr.
