A. T. ABBOTT.
H t I'MANGLE. No. 289,054. Patented Nov. 2'7, 1883.
wmassns: INVENTOR 9 T; 511m. 4 a? m 6 KM ATTO'RNE N4 PETERS. Plwlo-um n lw. wm-hu wn. D c
UNiTED STATES ALFRED 'r. ABBOTT, or new YORK,
PATE T @rricn,
MANGLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,054, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed February 18, 1883.
To (625 whmn it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALFRED T. ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of blew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mangles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a device for smooth ing or folding linen, paper, cloth, or any other similar material where a reasonable amount of pressure is required.
This invention consists in a novel improvement of a roller-press, so constructed of side pieces with a handle at their upper ends, and a small roller journaled at the lower ends to work on the under surface of a bed or base piece, and alarge roller suitably arranged between said side pieces on slide-bearings or otherwise, so as to allow the said roller to be moved nearer to or farther from the ends, as may be desired, to increase or diminish the pressure; and, further, in the combination, with the above device, of a suitable bed orbase piece, as hereinafter more particularly described.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, in'which. Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a-plan view of the frame shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A. A represent the side pieces of the frame, made of tubing, and, if necessary, can be made in two or more pieces, S S, Fig. 2, so it can be closed up, like a telescope, to facilitate transportation and to increase or diminish the pressure by extending or retracting it; and A designates a head with a thumb-screw, a to secure it at any point that may be desired.
B designates a handle at the upper ends of the side pieces, with thumb-screw b passing through one of the side-pieces and into thehandle, as shown at K, Fig. 2.
O is the roller, suitably placed on the lower ends of the handle, to work 011 the under sur- .J, to secure them to the side pieces.
(No model.)
face of the bed or base D, to hold the side pieces,
-A A, and to receive the strain exerted by use As here shown, it is journaled E one on each side pieceand is secured in position on said sleeves by having points a on the sleeves to engage with sockets d in the ends of the roller E; or, if found more desirable, the points may be on the ends of the roller E and the sockets in the sliding sleeves. The sleeves are also provided with athumb-screw, By this construction the roller may be quickly changed in the frame by simply opening the frame by unscrewing the thumb-screw Z) at the handle, so as to free the point a from the sockets at, when the roller E can be removed and another substituted; or a wooden roller may be used, if found desirable. The roller E has aflange, c, at its ends, to form guides to keep it on the bed or base, and also to prevent the fabric being pressed from injury by coming in contact with the sides of the frame. It may be remarked that the roller E may be hollow, and may be heated by the introducing of hot water or a heated rod.
G designates a base or bed, which in this example has legs so constructed that they may be folded up, so as to render it more convenient for shipping. WVheu it is in position, ready for use, the legs are secured by a button, i, passing over a pin, 8, as shown in Fig.1.
If necessary, the roller may be in the form of a fiat-iron for polishing purposes.
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the side pieces A A, of the roller 0, j ournaled in lower ends of the same, the handle B, rigidly secured to the up per end of one of the side pieces, and connected to the other by the thumb-screw b, sleeves E E 31OVld6d. with bearings and thumbthe roller E, the said roller 0 being below the screws, as set forth, and roller E, substantially table, and the roller E above the same,'as and as and for the purpose specified. for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a table, of a roller- I11 testimony whereof I affix my sign ature in 5 press consisting of the side pieces AA,the rollpresence of two witnesses.
er 0, journaled in the lower ends of said piece,
a handle rigidly attached to the upper end of ALFRED ABBOTT one of the side pieces, and removably connect- \Vitnesses: ed to the other, sleeves E E provided with FRANCIS O. BOWEN,
1o bearings and retaining-screws, as set forth, and GEO. W. HOPPER.
