FOLDING IRONING-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 14, 1918.
Application fi1ed.September 11, 1917. Serial No. 190,788.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM H. HOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bagdad, in the county of Santa Rosa and State of Florida, have invented certain useful Improvements in Folding Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates broadly to improvements in that class of inventions known as laundry and more particularly has reference to a folding ironing table.
As the primary aim and object, the present invention contemplates the provision of a novel frame, supporting legs being pivotally associated therewith for cooperating with the lower part of the frame to support the frame in an extended position, novel means being mounted onthe frame for adjustable engagement withthe legs to vary the height of the frame when in use.
The invention has for an additional object to provide novel means mounted on an ironing board for removable engagement extended Position.
Still further, the invention embraces the provision of a bosom board, improved means being mounted on the bosom board and en gageable at times with the main board for supporting the bosom board in an extended position.
It is a more specific object of this invention to mount a clothes supporting board in the frame and to rotatably connect the cross bars of the frame to the side bars so as to consequently facilitate swinging movement of the several boards, the connecting means between the boards, and the legs, to permit of the device being folded into a compact form when not in use.
Among the other aims and objects of the present invention maybe recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness. and in The preferred embodiment of the present invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective of the invention in an extended form.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the device when in a folded condition, and
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the invention in an extended position.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views,
to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings I provide an improved frame embodying side bars 1 maintained in spaced parallel relation with each other by a lower cross bar 2, an intermediate cross bar 3 and an upper cross bar 4, the reduced ends 5 of the cross bars 2 and 4 being journaled in the side bars adjacent to the respective ends thereof while the reduced ends 6. of the intermediate cross bars are journaled in the side bars and project beyond the outer faces thereof for a purpose that will presently appear.
In order to removably support the frame in an extended form such as illustrated in Fig. 1 I have pivotally connected the supporting legs 7 to the projecting reduced ends of the bars 3 and have rotatably mounted the reduced ends 8 of a cross bar 9 in the outer ends of the legs. A connecting bar 10 has its reduced end 11 mounted in the cross bar 2 while the outer end of the connecting bar is provided with a longitudinal series of openings 12 anyone of which are adapted for engagement with a stud 13 formed intermediate the ends of the cross bar 9 for maintaining the legs in an adjustable and substantially rigid position with respect to the frame so that the legs 7 may cooperate with the lower portions of the side bars which serve as legs and maintain the frame in an upright position. Of course, the height of. the frame may be adjusted by adjusting the connectingbar 10.
As intimated, a main ironing board 14E has been provided. The inner end of the board is rigidly connected to the under surface of the upper cross bar 4 and in order to removably maintain the. board in an extended position a rod 15 is pivotally mounted on the under surface of the board by a suitable fastening device 16. When in a folded cend t e the 1:99 is a pted; t be an ranged approximatelylongitudinally of the board but when it is desired to place the board in an extended position the board is raised to permit of the rounded ends 17 to be swung transversely of the board so that the said rounded ends will project therefrom and be receivable in slots 18 formed in the side pieces. As is apparent this rod cooperates with the upper cross bar 4: in removably maintaining the main board in an extended posit-ion.
A bosom board 19 has its inner end mounted in a recess 20 in the rotatably mounted cross piece 20 in the side bars while a supporting block 21 is hinged to the under surface intermediate the ends and when placing the table in an extended position the under surface of the block is engageable with the upper surface of the main board 14, when the latter is extended, so as to be supported in a plane approximately parallel and spaced from the plane of the main board. For the purpose of supporting clothes, a clothes supporting board 22 has its inner end rigidly connected to the under surface of the intermediate cross bar 3 while flexible connecting means, in the present instance consisting of a chain 23, has the respective ends connected to the inner end of the main board 14 and to the outer end of the clothes supporting board 22 for maintaining the clothes supporting board in substantially parallel spaced relation to the main board when the device is in an extended position.
When it is desired to place the board in an extended position as shown in Fig. 1, assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described, the legs which are normally arranged exteriorly of the lower portions of the side bars are swung upwardly and the connecting bar is moved downwardly so, that the desired opening 12 may be arranged about the stud 13 so as to support the frame in an upright position. The board 14 which is carried by the rotatably mounted cross bar 4 is swung upwardly and the rod 15 is swung toa position transversely of the under surface thereof whereupon the board is released to permit of the rounded ends 17 engaging the slots 18 in the side bars. Owing to the rotatable mounting of the cross bar 3 the clothes board 22 of course, will drop until the downward movement is limited by the chain, the latter serving to maintain it in the position illustrated in Fig. 1. In using the bosom board 19 the outer end thereof is engaged and swung upwardly to permit of the block 21 being swung downwardly whereupon the board is lowered so that the lower edge of the block will contact with the upper edge of the board and cooperate with the rotatably mounted cross piece in maintaining the same in the position shown.
Of course, when the main board is being used the bosom board is swung rearwardly so as not to interfere with the person who is using the device. Obviously, in collapsing the table it is only necessary to reverse the operation described. 7
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters-Patent is 1. An ironing table including a frame embodying side bars and a plurality of cross bars rotatably mounted in the side bars, the reduced extremities of the intermediate cross bar projecting through the side bars, legs pivotally mounted on the reduced extremities, a cross bar rotatably mounted between the outer ends of the legs, a connecting bar carried by the lower cross bar and ad justably engageable with the cross bar of the legs for maintaining the frame in an extended form, an ironing board carried by the upper cross bar, and means adjustably mounted on the under surface of the board and engageable with the sidebars of the frame or removably maintaining the board in an extended position.
2. An ironing table including a frame embodying side bars and cross bars the reduced ends of which are rotatably mounted in the side bars at uniformly spaced intervals while the reduced ends of the intermediate cross bar project through the side bars, legs pivotally mounted on the projecting reduced ends of the intermediate cross bar, another cross bar having the reduced ends rotatably mounted in the legs adjacent the outer ends thereof, a stud carried by the cross bar between the legs, a connecting rod having one end rigidly mounted in the lower cross bar in the frame and the opposite end provided with a plurality of openings 115 for removable engagement withthe stud to removably and adjustably maintain the frame in an extended position, an ironing board having one end rigidly connected to the upper cross bar in the frame, and a sup- 12 porting rod pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the under surface of the ironing board and adapted to be swung transversely thereof so that the projecting ends engage the upper surface of the side bars for main 125 taining the ironing board in an extended position,
3. An ironing table including a frame embodying side bars and cross bars the reduced ends of which are rotatably mounted 180 in the side bars at uniformly spaced inter vals While the reduced ends of the intermediate cross bar project through the side bars, legs pivotally mounted on the projecting reduced ends of the intermediate cross bar, another cross bar having the reduced ends rotatably mounted in the legs adjacent the outer ends thereof, a stud carried by the cross bar between the legs, aconnecting rod having one end rigidly mounted in the loWer cross bar in the frame and the opposite end provided with a plurality of openings for removable engagement With the stud to removably and adjustably maintain the frame in an extended position, an ironing board having one end rigidly connected to the upper cross bar in the frame, a bosom board svvingingly mounted between the upper ends of the frame above the ironing board, means mounted on the under surface of the bosom board and cooperating With the upper surface of the ironing board at times for maintaining the bosom board in an extended position, a clothes supporting board carried by the intermediate cross bar in the frame, and flexible means connecting the outer end of the clothes support ing board with the inner end of the ironing board for supporting the clothes supporting board in an extended position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
