E. J. WHITLOW.
POLDABLE STAND.-
APPLIOATION IILED -8EPT. 1. 1004.
r I I I aytmmlioz; ggij m I a I I x. v om 7591 M Wf W ELIZA JANE WHITLOW, OF GOLTRY OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
i FOLDABLE STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1906.
Application filed September I, 1904. Serial. No. 222,980.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZA J ANE WI-nTLow,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Goltry, inflthe county of Woods, Oklahoma Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Stands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same- This invention relates to foldable stands, which while primarily designed for utilizat1on as a wash ench is susceptible of employment for many other urposes, as will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter and the appended claims.
A convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing in full lines one adjustment thereof and in dotted lines another adjustment of the stand 3 and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device folded.
Referring more specifically to the draw ings, A represents an upright or standard to the lower portion of which and at opposite sides thereof are pivoted arms B, to the outer or free ends of which forearms C are ivoted. Each of the said arms and forearms as a leg I). By this arrangement I amenabled to provide a stand or rest of various outlines suitable to the various uses to which the device is to be put, and by an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings several of the adjustments will be apparent. In full lines the device is adjusted to substantially a hexagonal shape, the parts being locked in position by the detachable cross-bars E spanning the space between and engaging the respective pairs of arms and forearms. In dotted lines the device is shown as adjusted to approximately triangular formation, the parts being locked in place by a catch F at the end of one of the forearms engaging an eye carried by the adjoining end of the other orearm.
The device as thus far described is in the nature of an open-su porting-frame within which a heater may lie placed for cooking purposes or for maintaining the proper temperature of water in a washtub resting on the frame thereabove. When desired, a plate G may be placed upon the frame, the same being prevented from tipping forward by a cleat H on the upright A.
The upright A may be of any desired character, that illustrated being somewhat similar to that disclosed in my prior patent, No. 406,808, dated July 9, 1889. in that it is provided with abreak-joint a, the two sections of whicbhmay be locked togetherby ahook b and eye dle and conveniently carries a clothes-p ounder I, ivoted intermediate the ends thereof.
I is a detachable shelf having a wire support K secured to the under side thereof and engaging the rear surface of the upper section of the standard A. The support K is provided with a forwardly and downwardly bent ortion or hook removably engaging the base of the slotted portion 9' ofsaid upper section in which the pounder, before referred to, swings when in operation.
It is obvious that changes and alterations may be made in the structure and arrangement herein specified without departing from the spirit of the invention. I
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is a 1. A stand of the character described including a standard having two hinged sections, a clothes-pounder operatively associated with one of said sections, a pair of arms hinged to the other of said sections, a pair of forearms hinged to said arms for permitting the frame to assume different shapes and means for retaining said arms and forearms in their adjusted positions substantially as described.
2. A stand of the character described including a standard having two hinged sections, a clothespounder operatively associated with one of said sections, arms hinged to the other of said sections, forearms hinged to said arms, whereby the frame may assume various shapes, means for retaining said arms and forearms in their adjusted positions, a removable plate upon said frame in combination with means for preventing forward tilting of the plate on said frame.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIZA JANE WHITLOW.
