BENJAMIN MARSHALL HARRISON, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
IRONING TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,299, dated August '7, 1883,
Application filed Se; temher 24, 1857. Serial No. 250,592.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN MARsHALL HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ironing Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ironing-tables; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, more fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the ironingboard, the standards, crossed braces, and one of the feet being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the board detached from the stand and looking at the under side. Fig. 4: is a transverse section on line as x of Fig. 2, with the clothes-rack folded and in elevation.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the board or top, and B the stand on which it is secured. The said stand comprises the two uprights or standards 0 O, the former of which is provided on the lower end with the foot D and the diagonal intersecting braces E E, between the outer ends of which is arranged the upright O. The said braces are extended a short distance beyond the upright O, and the brace E is provided on the extremity with a foot, F. The extremity of the brace E is provided with a transverse notch, e, for a purpose hereinai'ter explained.
The inner or front side of the standard 0 is provided with a transverse notch or slot, 0, and close under the same is arranged the transverse bar 0, the upper side of the bar being flush with the lower side of the notch.
The rear end of the board A is provided with a notch, a, which is adapted to receive the upright 0, and the notch in the said upright is adapted to receive the rear edge of the board. Therefore when the said notches are thus registered, and the lower side of the table-top is resting on the transverse bar under the notch, the rear end of the said top is very securely locked in place.
G designates a transverse bar secured to the under side of the top near the outer or front (No model.)
end, and the same is adapted to lit in the notch in the upper end of the brace E; but the said bar is also provided at the center with a notch, g, which is adapted to receive the upper end of the said brace. Consequently it will be seen that the top is detachable from the stand, and in order to detach it it is simply necessary to raise the outer end of the top until the notches in the bar G and brace E are disengaged, and then draw the top outward or forward to disengage ihe notches in the standard 0 and the rear end of the board. To replace the top, the reverse operation is gone through with.
The upper side of the board or top, near or at the outer end, is provided with collarblock, H, which is adapted to fit the collar of the shirt which is to be ironed on the board, the said collar being adapted to be buttoned around the block to hold the shirt in place. This block may be increased or diminished in size by adding or removing the bands h h, of leather or other suitable material, which are clearly shown in the section.
'5 2' represent screws or studs which are secured in the lower side of the board, to which are attached the arms K K of the wire bosom stretcher I. The said arms are bent to pass around the outer edge of the board at the tapered end. The arms K K are provided with loops is k, engaging the screws 1' i, and are extended beyond the said screws to form the handles K K, which, when drawn together, cause the arms K to spread outwardly beyond the edges of the board.
L L designate toothed racks arranged trans versely on the under side of the board, in the teeth of which the handles K are adapted to be engaged to hold the samein the desired position. For instance, after the shirt has been placed on the board and the collar thereof buttoned around the block H, the handles K of the stretcher are drawn toward the center of the board, thus stretching the bosom of the shirt laterally, and when the desired tension has been reached the said handles are engaged in the toothed racks to hold the bosom in the stretched position until ironed.
M designates a clothes'horse or rack com prising two or three (or more) leaves N N, which is hinged at one end to the standard 0, and adapted to be folded up against the side which will then occupy but very little space.
The stretcher herein described is very simple and will be found exceedingly effective, accomplishing the stretching of the bosom of the shirt with but little trouble to the operator. The block H is also designed to serve as an iron rest or stand in addition to being a collar-block, as before described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with the ironing-table, of the screws it, secured to the under side thereof near the opposite edges, the bent wire stretcher I, having the arms K K, pivoted to the said screws, and the handles K on the ends of the arms, adapted, when drawn together, to spread the arms K, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the ironing-table,
of the screws 2' z, secured to the under side thereof, the bent wire stretcher passing around the outer edge of the board, and comprising the arms K K, provided with loops to engage around the screws i, the handles K K,formed as extensions ofthe said arms and adapted to be drawn together to spread the said arms, and the toothed racks L L, adapted to engage the handles to hold the stretcher in the desired position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the rigid stand composed of the standard 0, having a notch in its side near its upper end, the crossed braces extending from said standard, the brace E, having a notch, e, in its upper end, and the brace E, having a foot, F, on its lower end,
and the standard 0 between the braces, of the ironing-board having the notch a in one end to engage the notch in the standard, and provided with a crossbar having a notch, g, to engage the notch e in the brace E, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN MARSHALL HARRISON.
