PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. HOWE, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
MATTRESS-MAKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,512, dated October 19, 1880.
Application filed March 19, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. HOWE, of Galveston, in the county of Galvestomand in the State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Makin g Machines: and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofa machine for making mattresses, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
.In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my mattress-making machine, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents the base of the machine, at one end of which are two posts or standards, B B. Upon a rod, a, between said standards are pivoted the two side pieces, 0 O, which are provided with legs E, for supporting the same in about a horizontal position. At the forward ends of the side pieces, ()0, at the bottom, on a rod, b, is hung a door or gate, D, which closes upward and has grooves c, to receive the ends of the side pieces, said door being then held by latches d cl.
Below the rod is a cylindrical head, F, journaled in the standards B B, and to this head are fastened a series of slats, I I, which, when in a horizontal position, are supported upon a cross-bar, G, attached to the standards, and also upon a bar, H, which is let into the legs E and under edges of the sides 0. This bar H forms a gage for holding the sides the proper distance apart for mattresses of different width, it being notched at suitable points to fit on the legs. Another gage, J, attached to the standards, holds the inner ends of the sides.
L represents a solid top hinged upon a removable rod, h, and provided at its outer end with a series of pins, 2', upon which straps m, attached to the outer ends of the slats, are to be fastened.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The door D is let down and the top L raised.
made is then laid on the slats 1 and spread in proper form. The top L is then let down and pressed upon the material until the straps m can be fastened on the pins i. The ticking, having been previously sewed at the sides and one end, is now drawn over the top, material, and slat-s, and the door D closed. The rod h is then drawn out and the top L drawn out atthe back, the material and the slats yet remaining in the ticking. The mattress can then be tacked between the slats, if desired, and the whole raised up, the head F turning on its journals, when the mattress can be easily drawn off and completed.
Some of the slats I are removable, so as to be taken out for making a mattress ofless width, in which case a narrower top is also used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the laterally-adjustable sides 0 0, legs E, hinged door D, and the gages H J, arranged to hold the sides 0 (J at different points, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. Thejournaled head F, with slats I, in combination with the hinged top L, having pins t and the straps m, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I J annary, 1880.
CHARLES P. HOWE.
