To wHoM IT vMAY eoNoERN;
Be it known that I, TURNER BARNS, of Greensburg, Decatur county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Spinning Machines; and I hereby declare the following-to be' afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to the construction of a hand-spinning machine whose spindle is so mounted in an adjustable arm as to be capable of being swung back for drawing the yarn, and yet to preserve its proper angle and presentation with reference to the operator.
A is a bench mounted on the legs B B I3, and having the customary post C, in which is jonrnalled the shaft D ofthe main wheel or rim E, having the usual handle F, and also a crank, G, for a purpose hereafter explained. Hinged or pivoted to the ond of the bench farther from the rim is a swinging arm or board, II, in whose free extremity is pivoted a vertical stem or head, I., which affords journal-bearing for the spindle Jupen which theyarn is spun and drawn. A suitable whirl, K, in the spindle, carries a belt, L, which, passing over idlers M M', that are jeurnalled to and vibrate with the head I, engages around a whirl, N, on the stein I, from coincident with the pivot ofthe swinging arm, ound an idler, S, on a stem, T, to the rim or driver ed sheave, V, around which are fastened two belts, nterpoisc, X, and a. trcadle, Y. The weight X acts when she desires to draw the yarn, presses her foot on In order that the spindle shall in every position be pre` sented fair to thc operator, I provide in the upper side of the arm aqgroove, Z, which guides a sliding-rod, l, which, being connected by p itman 2 to a stem, I, and by'another pitm'an, 3, to the under side of the benehA, the spindle is maintained at the same', or nearly the same angle or bearing, whether the arm I be advanced or ent the spindle is madeto retain a horizontal or any other definite position and given bearing, while susceptible, also, of being alternately swung away from and toward the operator, for the operations of drawing, twisting, and winding. The stationary stem T may carry a flaxspinning spool and iers, U. To adapt the vmachine for dax-spinning, the above-described belting is disconnected, and belts passed from the rim E to the spool and ier-whirls of the laxspinner, and the treadle being disengaged from the rear leg B, is connected by cord or pitmanto the crank G, and its eye 4 is engaged over and from a sheave, R, on this whirl, another belt is carried ar E. The pivoted end of the arm I takes the form of a scor W W', which are respectively connected to a weight or cou to swing the arm I toward the operator, and the latter, the treadle, and at the same instant rotates the rim.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- 1. The arrangement of spindle J, maintained in a by means of slidingfrod l and pitmen'2 3 and stem I.
2. In combination with elements of claim I, I claim the a by weight X and treadle Y, and their described or equivalent In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
