IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIE FASTEN-ERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,09S, dated April 21, 1874; application filed October 4, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1,-SYLVANUs C. STnTsoN, of North Bridgewater, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Neck- Tie Holder and Fastener, of which the following is a specication:

This neck-tie holder and fastener is composed substantially of two jaws or levers and a spring, and, as a whole, it is constructed so as to fasten automatically about the front button of a shirt-collar, and to be readily unfastened therefrom, securingin the one instance the location of the neck-tie on the shirt-but ton, and in the other instance its removal or detachment.

In the accompanying plate of drawings, Figure 1 is a back View of a neck-tie to which is applied the improved holder and fastener embraced herein. Figs. 2, 3, and 4, respectively, a side, a plan, and a sectional, view, line :o x, Fig. 1, of the holder and fastener.

ln the drawings, A represents a neck-tie or bow, and B my improved neck-tie holder and fastener. This holder and fastener B is composed substantially of two jaws or levers, a a, similarly shaped, and a spring-band, b. The spring-band b joins together the two jaws, and in its action it holds them closed, the edge o of the one jaw against the corresponding edge o of the other. f, a notch, in the edge o of each jaw a.. These notches fare similarly located. and with the edges c against each other they make a continuous opening, by which to interlock or fasten the jaws on or about a shirtbutton or stud, as shown in Fig. l. g, a thumbpiece, to each jaw. These thumb-pieces are continuous with the spring-band b, and, by pressing them toward each other, the jaws, at their notches f, are opened from each other. h, a plate, secured by stitching to the back of the neck-tie; l, raised loops of plate h, which loops make slots m, and through these slots the jaws a are passed, securing them, or, in other words, the holder B, to the neck-tie. The

spring-band b projects from the jaws a, and forms a shoulder, a, for the plate h to rest on in the application of the jaws to the plate, as above described.

The holder being thus secured to the necktie or bow, to locate the neck-tie for being worn, the thumb-pieces gare pressed together, and the jaws a, with their notches j' placed uppermost between the front button on the neel:- band of the shirt and the neck-band, when the thumb-pieces are then released, and the attachment of neck-tie to the button is made by the selfclosing of the jaws a about the button from the action of their spring-band b.

The plate h may be dispensed with, and in lieu of it the jaws can be pivoted directly to the neck-tie; or they can be secured by loops, the same as described for the plate h, except that the loops be made of cord, and attached to the neck-tie. I prefer, however, the plate attachment h, as it secures a better and more reliable action of the jaws, and also, taken in connection with the shoulderrest 'n of the jaws, more perfectly holds the neck-tie from dropping out of its proper place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A holder and fastener for neck-ties, having jaws a a, with spring-connection b and thumb-pieces g g, all combined and constructed substantially as described, for the purpose speeitied.

2. In combination with the above, the plate 71 with its slots m., substantially as described, for the purpose specified.

3. The shoulder a, on the jaws a, for a rest to the neck-tie, substantially as described.
