Description

July 8 1924. i J. KAUF-MAN CONTAINER FOR SAFETY RAZORS Filed Sept. 11, 1923 I 'u L ATTORNEY Patented July 8, 1924.
UNETED STATE JOSEPH KAUFMAN, OF NEW YORK, Y., ASSIGNOB T0 AMERICAN SAFETY RAZOR CORPORATION, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YQBK, A CORPORATION QF VIIIRGINIl-l.v
, ,I CONTAINER FOR SAFETY RAZORS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH KAUFMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers for Safety Razors, of which the following is al specification.
The invention relates toa container or lo box for holding a safety-razor outfit and receiving coins, and it consists in the novel features of construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in theclaims. l Y t One object of the invention is to provide a neat and attractive form of box adapted to conveniently holdy a safety-razor and a package of reserve blades and to serve as a bank or money box, the container having a special compartment for receiving coins and a specially located entrance slot through which the coins may be introduced into said compartment, said slot also having means for preventing the accidental escape of the coins. One purpose of the invention is to provide means whereby when a man shaves himself he may introduce a coin or coins into the banking-chamber of the box until said chamber becomes filled or it should be desired to remove the coins therefrom. The container represents means for inducing a man to shave himself and save money by so doing. Y
The details of the container are of novel construction and arrangement, and the invention will beyrfully understood from the description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container and money box constructed in accordance with and embodying the invention, the cover of the box being shown in open position and a safety razor and package of reserve blades being shown in position within the container;
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through` the same, taken on the dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 3; f
Fig. 3 is'a central vertical longitudinal section through the same, taken on the dotted line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of one removable feature of the container.
In the drawings, 10 indicates the rectangu- Application filed.. 'September 11, 1923. Serial No. 662,040.
lar body of the box and 11 the cover therefor, said cover containing an interior chamber 12 and being adapted at its lower edges to rest upon the upper edges of the body 10, so that the side and end surfaces of the closed box will be flush. The body 10 and cover 11 may be formed of wood or other suitable niaterial, and said cover is hinged at its rear lower edge to the upper edge of the back of the body 10 by means of an inner fabric lining 13 and an outer leather or like covering 14, the leather 14 covering the back of the box from the top of the cover 11 to the lower `edge of the body 10 and extending below said body, as shown in Fig. 2. The lining fabric 13.is looped as shown in Fig. 2 so as to permit the cover 11 to be opened, but to restrain said cover against undue opening movement, as shown in Fig. 1. The exterior ofthe body 10 is also covered by leather or other suitable material 15, and the cover 11 is likewise covered on its exterior by a leather or other suitable material 16, the coverings 15, 16 preferably corresponding with each other and respectively extending inwardly over the upper edges of the body 10 and under the lower edges of the cover 1,1 as indicated in Fig. 2.
YThe body 10 is provided with a stud 17 to be engaged by a snap fastener`18 carried by a strap 19 which is secured to the 4 cover 11, the purpose of these features being to detachably latch the cover in closed position upon the body of the container.
The body of the container is divided by 'a horizontal partition 20 into an upper chamber 21 and a lower chamber or compartment '22, and said partition 2O is formed at one end, near the front of the box, with an' exit Vhole 23. The partition 2O supports a verticaltr'ansverse partition24 which subdivides vthe chamber 21 into two compartments into one of which, at one end of the box, is detachably though snugly seated a block 25, shown detached in Fig. 4. The block 25 will be suitably covered with velvet or other soft fabric and is seated upon the partition 20 and fits between the front and back portions of the bodylO and between the part-ition 24 and one end of said body, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The block 25 in its forward portion is formed with a slot or groove 26 which, with the adjacent surface of the front of the body 10, constitutes a coin slot down through which coins may be passed to enter the chamber 22, and in rear of the groove or coin-slot 26 the block 25 is formed with a longitudinal groove or recess 27 adapted to receive the handle of a safety razor frame 28, whose blade carrying portion will rest within the chamber formed at the other side of the partition 24, as shown. The block 25 is of considerable elevation at its front portion and at its rear portion has a iat extension 29 which rests upon the partition 20 and extends rearwardly to the back of the body 10, as shown in Fig. 2, and upon this extension 29 is placed a package 30 of reserve blades for the safety razor. The block 24 covers the opening 23 in the partition 20, except at the base of the groove or coin-slot 26, as shown in Fig. 2, and upon the bottom of the block 25 I secure a flexible strip of steel, Celluloid or the like 31, whose free end crosses the lower end of the groove or coin-slot 26, as shown by full lines in Figs. 2 and 4. lhen a coin is introduced downwardly through the coin slot 26, the free end of the flexible strip 21 will yield downwardly so as to allow the coin to pass into the chamber'22, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, but normally the strip 31 crosses the lower end of the coin slot or groove 26 and its purpose is mainly to prevent coins from sliding out through said groove or coin-slot at times when the boX or container might be turned upside down or to other unusual position. The block 25 is made detachable or removable from the container so that when desired the coins may be dumped out of the chamber 22 through the hole 23, which on the removal of the block 25, becomes open and exposed.
The partition 20 may be secured within the body of the container in, any suitable manner, but for the sake of strength I preferably mount the said partition upon end blocks 32 formed on or secured to the ends of the body of the box, as shown in Fig.
then the safetyrazor and the reserve blades are within their respective compartments, as shown in Fig. 1, they project somewhat above the block 25 and adjacent portions of the body 10 and their upwardly projecting portions and are accommodated within the chamber 12 of the cover 11.
The purposes of the container will be practically fully understood from the foregoing description of the construction of the container. The chamber 22 is provided to receive coins which may be introduced downwardly through the groove or coin slot 26, while the upper chamber 21 of the body 10 is designed to hold the block 25 and receive the safety-razor and package of blades 30. The construction as a whole has Vbeen designed with a view of providing an attractive and convenient holder ,'for a safety-razor outfit and combine therewith a bank into which a person shaving himself may introduce coins to save as a reserve fund. When the cover 11 is in closed position it may be securely fastened by means of the stud 17, snap fastener 18 and strap 19, and when it is desired to have access to the container the snapfastener 18 'will be detached from the stud 17 and thereupon the cover 11 may be turned to its open position, shown in Fig. 1, the fabrics 13, 14 operating as a hinge and the fabric 13 additionally acting to prevent the cover 11 from opening unduly.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A container of the character described for safety-razor outfits and to receive coins, said container being of box-'like construction and comprising a body-portion and a chambered cover hinged at one edge thereto, said body portion having a horizontal partition subdividing it into a lower money-chamber and an upper chamber to receive asafetyrazor and a package of reserve blades, said upper chamber having a vertical transverse partition and at one side thereof a. space for a package of blades and a removable block which is grooved longitudinally to receive the handle of the razor while t-he body of the razor is within the space at the opposite side of said vertical partition, said horizontal partition having a hole in it mainly below said block and said block having a coin entrance slot leading to said hole.
2. A container of the character described for safety-razor outfits and to receive coins, said container being of box-like construction and comprising a body-portion and a chambered cover hinged at one edge thereto, said bodyep'ortion having a horizontal partition subdividing it into a lower money-chamber and an upper chamber to receive a 'safetyyrazor and a package of reserve blades, said upper chamber having a vertical transverse partition and at one side thereof a space for a package of blades and a removable block which is grooved longitudinally to receive the handle of the razor while the body of the razor is within the space at the opposite Side of said vertical partition, said horizontal partition having a hole in it mainly below said block and said block having a coin entrance slot leading to said hole, and also a iexible strip whose free end iis projected transversely across the lower end of said slot, said strip being yieldable to admit coins to the money-chamber and serving to prevent accidental escape of the coins therefrom.
