IMPROVEMENT IN STEROTVPE-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,239, dated March 31, 11574; application filed February 19, 1874. l

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, FRIEND JAMES Orr, of Greenwich, in the county of Washington and State of N ew York, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Stereotype-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in con structing a stereotypemachine with a bed that may be removed at will for heating purposes, and also with the bed and platen set oft' from the uprights at such proper distance that the chase and furniture ot the form may extend beyond said bed and platen, thereby admitting of a form being worked nearly the whole size ot the bed; and in the general construction and arrangement of the machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my machine, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.

A represents the bed-frame or base of my machine, upon which are two upright posts or standards, B B. The upper ends of these standards form tenons c a, which are passed upward into mortises made in the center of the side pieces of a frame, G, and said frame pivoted to these tenons so that it may be allowed to tilt toward one end. The tilting frame G, when placed in a horizontal position, is supported upon a post or standard, B', on the base A, and fastened to the same by a latch, b, or other suitable fastening device. Upon each side ofthe frame G are two uprights, D D, each provided with a vertical guide, d, on its inner side. The upper ends of all the uprights D are forked, and in those upon one side of the frame are pivoted crossbars E, which are heldin the forks of the upi rights on the other sides by means of pins e e.

Through eachl of the cross-barsE passes a screw, G, to operate upon the top of the platen. The uprights D D are set off beyond the main part of the tilting frame C, and the bed H is extended out on both sides opposite said uprights, forming, as it were, arms fj', which are forked to straddle the guides d d. I- represents the platen, which is also extended opposite the uprights, forming similar forked arms f' j", to straddle the guides d. d.

By this arrangement of setting out the up-v rights and extending certain portions of the bed and platen, the chase and furniture of the form to be stereotyped may project over or beyond the bed, so that the type, wood-engraving, stereotype, electrotype, Src., being copied, may take up nearly the full size of the bed, if necessary, thereby greatly enlarging the working room of the machine.

The arms of the bed and platen keep them in proper place by stra-ddling the guides d d, as above described.

It will also be noticed that the bed I-I is removable, and can be taken out at any time for the purpose of heating.

It is, of course, understood that the machine is to be made of iron, steel, or other suitable metal.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,` is- 1. The upright standards B B, having tenons a a, in combination with tilting frame C, bed H, and post B', substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.

2. The combination of the base A, posts B B', tilting frame C, uprights D D, with guides d, crossbars E, screws G, bed H, with arms f, and the platen I, with arms j", all con- 'structed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
