Description

TfSCHUG & c. B. ALSOVER.
Improvement in Tobacco Cutters.
Patented Jan. 23,- 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIcE'.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,050, dated J annary 23, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THEODORE SCHUG and CYRUS B. ALSOVER, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Cutters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the let ters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a tobaccocutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of our cutter.
A represents the bed or base-board of our cutter, provided at one end with an upright cast-metal frame, B, the sides of which extend toward the rear at the bottom, so as to answer the purpose of braces to hold the frame firmly in proper position. In the frame B are formed suitable guides at for cam-flanges on the end of the lever which operates the cutter, and also bearings 12 b, which are open at their lower ends for the insertion of the journals of said lever above mentioned. There is also in the frame a square notch, e, forming one-half of a vertical guide for the upright bar-O, which is attached to or forms part of the cross-head D. The cross-head is held between the flanges d in the frame B and similar flanges d/ on a plate G, which is firmly secured on the front side of the frame by means of screws, bolts, or other suitable means. The flanges d d are arranged at each end of the cross-head so as to form guides for the up-and-down movement of the same. To this cross-head the knife E is attached in such a manner that it can be readily removed forlsharpening. In the plate G is formed another square notch, 0, corresponding with the notch e in the frame, to complete the guide for the bar 0. H represents the lever, having a head, I, at its front ends with journals or gudgeons f, which are inserted in the bearings I) b. On the upper side of the head I are cam flanges h h, projecting on both sides of the head and inserted in the guides at a,- and along the under side of the head are similar flanges h h, also projecting on both sides and fitting in guides it formed on the upper end of the bar 0.
It will be noticed that when the lever His raised the cams h h draw the head of the lever upward till the journals f f come to the up per ends of the bearings 11 b, and, at the same time, the cams h h draw the knife or cutter E upward. When the lever H is depressed the motion is reversed, thus giving a double cam-motion and allowing of twice the distance that the knife can be moved than it could if the journals 7" f were stationary in their bearmgs.
On one side of the frame 13 is a flange, k, in which a square box, J, is placed; and said box is firmly held by means of a button, m, being turned over a projection, a, on the box. Through the box J is passed a bar, K, the front end of which is bent at right angles, coming directly in front of the cutter or knife E when the same is down. This bar is held at any point desired by means of a set-screw, 19, through the box, thus forming a gauge for measuring the pieces to be out 011'.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The frame B, provided with guides at, bearings 12, flanges d, and notch e, in combination with the plate G having flanges d and notch c, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The lever H, formed with a head, I, which is provided with journals f and camflanges h and h, and used in combination with the guides at z' and bearings b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the frame B, plate G, cross-head D with knife E, bar G with guides z, and lever H having head I with double cams h h, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
