UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS D. GREEN, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PANEL- RAISING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,803, dated November 9, 1875; application filed June 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS D. GREEN, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Panel- Raising Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the machine for cutting panels for which Letters Patent No. 81,361 were granted to me August 25, 1868; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustable beam holding one of the cutterheads, with the cutters or knives attached thereto, in such a manner as to furnish an improved machine for forming raised panels, so
' as to raise and finish a panel at one operation,
in such a manner as to make the raising on the two sides of the panel of the same or of different widths, at the will of the operator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referringto the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my panel-raisin g machine, embodying my present improvement and having a part of the machine removed, said part being shown detached in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the machine. Fig.3 is a sectlon of a part of the machine. I
A represents the frame of the machine, constructed in any suitable form to contain the working parts, as described in my former patent above referred to. B is the adjustable beam, hinged to the frame by any suitable hinge, O. F represents the cutter-head, having its shaft or journal-bearings in the adjustable beam B. E is a vertical screw-rod or le ver, by which the adjustable beam B is raised or lowered at the will of the operator. D is a thumb-nut, by which the adjustable beam is held in any desired position. G is a groove made in the frame A, in which the end of the adjustable beam B is held so as to graduate its position at the will of the operator, by means of the vertical screw or lever E and the thumb-nutD; and also to prevent the adjustable beam from moving sidewise.
By thus arranging the adjustable beam B, holding the cutter-head F, the operator is enabled to raise the panel of the same or of different widths on its two sides, according to the will of the operator, at one operation, and not raise the panels the same width on both sides, as described in my former patent above referred to.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The adjustable beam B, fastened to the frame A A by the hinge G, and containing the cutterhead F, and adjusted by means of the screw rod or lever E and thumb-nut D in the groove Gr, all constructed and operated substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of May, 1875.
