Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,405, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT F. WALKER, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Raising Panels, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to improve the machines for raising panels in wood in such manner that the wood shall be out clean. and smooth and the machine be capable of executing work that ordinary machines in use could not successfully do; and it consists in the construction, arran gem cut, and adjustability of some of the parts of the machine, by which the improvement is effected, as is more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side View of the machine; Fig. 2, a plan or top view; Fig 3, a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4. is a side and top view of the presser-foot and guide. Fig. 5 represents a single cutter-head and cutters thereon. Fig. 6 represents a double cutter-head and two sets of cutters, and Fig. 7 represents an edge and side View of a wrought panel.
A is the frame of the machine, which may be of wood, but metal is preferable; and is so constructed that all the parts of the machine are readily accessible at all times. B is a table, hinged at the forward end at b to frame A in such manner that the table can be readily turned over and expose the cutter-heads and cutters to be adjusted or put in order when necessary. B is a guide, placed longitudinally on the table B and rising vertically. B is a hood or covering for one of the cutter-heads O, and is fast to guide B, from which an arm, b extends horizontally and lies upon a projection, N, of table B, which has a slot made therein, so that the guide B can be adjusted on and with relation to the table B and cutter-head C as may be desired, and, when so adjusted, held by holding-screw b which goes through arm b and slot in projection b Guide 13 has a perforation, I), through it to admit the cutter-head O and adjustable guide and presserfoot H. that are adjustable both at their top and bottom ends, and so that the cutter-heads and cutters can be adjusted further from or nearer to each other, as may be desired. E E are curved upright and adjustable supports for the bearings of shafts E, which are transversely adjustable upon cross-girts .F and e of frame A by holding-screws e and e.
G Gr are horizontal beds attached to supports E, and adjusted therewith, are made to bear against and slide in contact with the cross-girt F, and upon which they are adjusted by the adj ustin g-screw g. Shafts E pass vertically through these beds, and, of course, are adjusted with them. Upon one side and at one corner of the beds G rises an upright, 9, that is cast with or permanently fixed thereto, and at its top end has an adjusting-screw, h, through it. Encircling the corner of bed G, and in continuation with the up1'igl1tg,is an adjustable presser-foot and guide, H, which can be adjusted vertically by means of the holding-screw, h, which passes through slot h in guide H into the bed G, against which the guide is firmly held by screw h. This presserfoot and guide H on its inner diameter is in form of a segment of a circle, the diameter of which circle is a little larger than that of the extreme outer circle of the knife or cutter in its revolution, which revolves within the circle of this guide and presser-foot or bar H, but eccentric to the axis of the cutter-head, as the edge of the presser-foot and guide at h is made thin, so that the cutter-head and its cutters will pass close to but not touch the same, and project to cut the wood even with the iacej of the presser-foot H. The pressenfoot H is adjusted with the cutter-heads so that when one is moved the other moves with it, and thus keep their relative position after once being adjusted to work together. I is a horizontal shaft revolving in suitable bearings on frame A, and has a cone of band-bulleys, I, by which it is revolved, and on its inner end is a wormwheel or screw-gear wheel, 2', gearing into and giving motion to gear-wheel i on upright shaft 1", at the upper end of which is toothed feedroller 1'. i is a horizontal bar, of such shape as to receive the shaft 1 and rubber spring i and be attached to the cross-girt F of frame A, and have adjusting-screw act to give feed-roller i" such pressure against the passing lumber as will insure its being fed through the machine and in contact with cutters on cutter-heads (J. The cutter-headsare made inclined, and the edges of the knives or cutters are of such shape as will give to themselves on the inclined cutter-head a drawing cut, and thereby cut the Wood smooth and clean. If it is desireable to cut the rabbet wider a double head, D, or a cutter-head having two sets of knives or cutters thereon, as is seen in Fig. 6, is used, as the two sets of knives G and G will cut the wood easier than a single set of knives. These double heads can also be used to attach two difierent kinds of knives, or knives having different moldings upon them, as they can be readily taken off the spindles of shafts E and reversed; or what was the lower knives can be made to be upper and cutting ones. The guide B can be adjusted transversely upon the bed B when desired, and is sometimes very convenient to do in preference to moving or adj usting the cutter-heads or their supports. K is a section of a wrought panel that has passed through the machine, and in Fig. 3 is seen in the machine being wrought upon.
The guides or presser-feet H can be adjusted to act with the cutter-head when the two sets of knives are used, as the slots in them allow of its being raised high enough to accommodate the height of the two sets of knives. The cutterheads being placed diagonally, with a right angle to the face of the guide B, allows of the presser-foot of the outer cutter to act as the support or guide to the panel while the other cutter is acting, thus keeping the panel firmly against a solid bearing opposite to the last cutter, and, consequently, no jar-or springing of the panel is had and the wood is clean and smooth cut. The table B at its rear. end is adjusted to difierent heights by temper-screw b passing through arm I) of frame A and bearing upon the under side of table B, and when so adjusted is held in place by holding-screw 1).
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. The adjustable perforated guide B having hood B attached, in combination with the table B, constructed and arranged to operate in the manner shown and described.
2. The vertically-adjustable presser foot or guide H, constructed and arranged to operate with relation to the cutter and panel, as herein described.
3. The double cutter-head D having cutters C and 0 attached thereto, constructed in the manner herein described, for the purpose set forth.
4. The arrangement of the presser-foot-H on the bed G of the outer cutter-head to be opposite to the cut of the cutter on the inclosed cutter-head, and at the same time act as a guide to the finished part of the panel, as shown and described.
