IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR'RAISING PANELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,015, dated August 19, .1873; application filed May 14, 1873.
,To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS D. GREEN, of
Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine for Raising Panels 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists, first, in an adjustable cutter-head arranged under the feed-table of the machine, and working through an openingin the same to cut the rabbet on the under side of the wood; second, in'the combination of one or more stationary revolving cutter-heads, and one or more movable or adjustable cutter-heads, arranged above and below the feed-tablefor raising a panel on both sides at one operation; third, in the means for adjustingv the under cutter-head; fourth, in an independently-adjustable guard or guide arranged in the feed-table for the purpose of forming a support in the under rabbet; and, fifth, in two or more revolving cutter-heads arranged above the feed-table, one of'said heads extending outwardly beyond the other for the purpose of cutting two or more different depths of panels at one operation.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an end view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of my. ma-
chine. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the movable.
cutter-head and shaft.
A represents the frame of my machine, constructed in any suitable form, to contain the working parts. In suitable journal-boxes on or in the top of the frame are located two or more horizontal shafts, B B, upon one end of each of which is secured a cutter-head, 0. These heads may be constructed in any desired manner, and the cutters or knives on E. In the sides of the frame A are made vertical slots to to guide-a holder, G, which is moved up and down by means of a vertical screw-shaft, H, and which carries a horizon tal shaft, I. This shaft carries upon one end a cutter-head, J, which projects and works in an aperture in the feed-table E. This feed table is also adjustable up and down by means of screw-shafts H H.
By adjusting the feed-table E to the thickness of the wood, so as to allow the wood to.
lie on the table and be moved forward by the feed-rollers D D, the upper cutter-heads G U will out the rabbets and raise the panel on the upper side of the wood. The movable head J having also been adjusted to the proper height, the rabbet is cut and the panel raised on the under side of the wood at the same time; or, in other words, the panels are raised on both sides of the wood at one operation. i
The shafts B B and I are revolved by means of belts b, b, and (Z passing around pulleys e e on the main shaft K, the belt d being twisted, as shown, to cause the cutter head J to revolve in the right direction. This belt will, in a full-sized machine, be provided with a tightening-pulley, so as to keep the same taut at whatever point the shaft I may be adjusted.
The cutter-head J may be dropped below the feed-table if it is desired not to use the same, and the belt d is then thrown off. In like manner either of the belts b may be thrown off when it is desired not to use all the cutter-heads O.
In the feed-table E is made a movable piece, L, adjusted up and down by means of set-screws h h, so as to fit in the rabbet cut by the lower adjustable cutter-head J, and form a guard or guide for the wood to pre- Vent the same from rocking or tilting.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the main frame A and its stationary revolving cutters O O, the adjustable holder G with cutter J, Vertical screw-rod H, adjustable feed-table E with adjustable guide L, and vertical screw-rods H H, all constructed and operated substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the'foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of May, 1873.
FRANCIS D. GREEN.
