Description

March 25 1924.`
N. STEVENS LICENSE TAG HOLDER Filed Nov. 2l. 1922 Patented Mar. 25, 1924.
irs stares LICENSE-TAG HOLDER..
Application led November 21, 1922. Serial No. 602,390.
To au whom t may concern:
Be it lrnown that I, NORMAN STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Morris, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in License- Tag Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates vto an illuminating license tag holder and has for its principal object to provide a device of this nature having a simple and efficient construction, one which is reliable in use, durable, attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of the device showing the front thereof,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the rear,
Figure 3 s a longitudinal horizontal section through the device, and
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse section through the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the casing which is open at its front end and which .front end is provided with the depending flange 2 extending from the upper side and the upstanding iiange 3 extending from the lower side. These anges 2 and 3 preferably extend perpendicularly from their respective Sides and are in substantially the same plane. The license number plate 4 is constructed with suitable indicia punched therefrom and a transparent panel 5 is placed thereover so that the source of illumination 6 will send rays of light through the plate 4 and through the panel 5 so that the indicia usually the state and license number may be readily seen, it being understood that this device is usually carried on the rear of an automobile.
The members 4 and 5 are received within and held in place by the iianges 2 and 3 being slid from end to end. These members 4 able in the opening of the casino' and 5 are held in place by bendable clips 7 which are constructed of a suitable bendable material preferably metal and are in the form of bars bent over upon themselves so as to be overlapped and the meeting ends are suitably fixed to the rear Of the casing l while the intermediate portion is bent over in front of the panel 5. This allows the intermediate end to be readily grasped and bent out of the way so that the panel and plate may be removed when desired without endangering the fingers as this intermediate portion will present a smooth gripping surface thus preventing cutting of the iiesh.
The bracket which is here disclosed consists of a U-shaped body member 8 having the angular-ly extending lips 9 disposed on its terminals which lips are permanently xed to the rear of the casing. The intermediate portion of the body 8 is provided with suitable slots 10 extending longitudinally thereof for receiving fastening elements whereby the device may be readily attached to the .vehicle Although I have described my invention with some degree of particularity it is to be understood that only the preferred construction has been shown by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is r- A device of the class described including a casing having an opening, a panel movg, a clip for holding the panel in place, said clip formed from a bar of yieldable and bendable material overlapped upon itself through out its length and having its meeting ends fixed to the casing and its intermediate portion curved so that a portion Of the clip may be bent' over so as to engage the panel for holding' the same in the Opening of the casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NORMAN STEVENS.
