"WILLIAM S. RISCO. G ll llillCHlel-idlilillfilt, MICHIGAN.
NAIv'iE-PLATE HG'LDER.
Application filed June 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, i i iLLiAM S. Ersco, a citizen of the'llnited States, residing at li/lichigamme, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented cer t ain new and useful Improvements in a Name-Plate Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a name plate holder and has for its principal ob ject to provide a device of this nature consisting of an illuminated casing adapted to hold a transparent plate preferably having thereon the name of a city from which the vehicle to which the device is attached is from.
An important object of the invention is to provide a clip for locking the transparent plate in a closed position on the casing or holder.
Gther objects of the invention are to provide a device of this nature having a simple and efiieient structure, one which is reliable, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, attractive in appearance, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in cer tain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken therethrough,
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken theret-hrough,
Figure lis a perspective view of the clip used for holding the transparent name plate on the holder, and
Figure 5 is a detail enlarged section taken through one corner of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the casing which is constructed with the back wall 2 including diverging side wings 3 terminating in the sides 4. The top and bottom walls 5 are substantially triangular in formation. A rectangular shaped flange 6 is arranged about the front edges of the side, top and bottom walls forming a frame which is V-shaped in cross section as is indicated in Figure 3. One end of the frame, however,
was. seen No. 6%,977.
is slotted as at 2 so that a transparent panel preferably of celluloid and indicatedat'. 8 may be passed through the slot and have its edges disposed inthe channels fori'ned by the frame 6. This transparent panel is preferably formed of celluloid and has written thereon the name of the city or town from which the automobile to which the device is attached is from. A source of illumination 9 is disposed within the casing so that it may be lighted in the nighttime and the name of the town or city read from a considerable distance. This source of illumination 9 is preferably in the form of an electric bulb which is attached to the rear wall 2 being threadedly engaged with a nut 10 fixed to this wall on the interior thereof.
A clip 11 is attached to the end of the transparent panel at. As is disclosed to adv itage in Figures 4 and 5 this clip includes a pair of spaced plates 12 one on each side of the panel. These plates are connected by a loop portion 18 which forms a gripping member so that the panel may be slid in and out of engagement with the frame 6. On the end of one of the plates 12 there is provided a curved extension 14-. This clip is; formed of resilient material and this curved extension will. engage the extension 15 formed on one side wall 4: adjacent the slot of the frame and hold the panel 8 against accidental displacement. VVit-h a little force the curved portion 14. may be pulled from engagement with the extension 15 and Will flatten out during the time the clip is being forced from or into the frame and because of the resilient nature of the clip this curved portion will resume its normal configuration.
On the bottom edge of the frame a pair of slotted depending spaced plates 17 are formed so that the usual license tag may be attached thereto. This device is preferably disposed in close proximity to the ordinary tail light on the automobile and the bulb 9 is contrdlled through the switch of this tail light.
Although I have described my invention with a certain degree of particularity it is to be understood that numerous changes in the combination, arrangement and details of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described including a casing having an opening, a frame disposed about the opening of the casing, a panel slidable in the frame, and a clip disposed on one end of the panel and including a resilient curved extension for engaging the frame and preventing accidental displacement of the panel.
2. In combination, a frame, a panel slidable in the frame, and a clip including a pair of spaced plates one on each side of the panel and a loop gripping portion connecting' the plates, and a curved extension formedon the end of one of said plates, said clip also being slidable through the frame so that the curved extension ma engage an inner end of the frame for ho ding the panel in position therein so as to prevent its accidental displacement.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a clip designed for the purpose specified including a pair of flat spaced plates, a loo portion connecting the plates, and a curve resilient extension formed on the end of one plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 25 in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM S. RISCO. itnesses THOMAS J. GOODNAN, CLIn CHANTELAIS.
