Description

-A.C.$.GATTI Sept. 22
ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILE TAIL LAMPS Filed'Feb. 26 1925 barren stares AGATHA o. s. GATTI, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILE TAIL LAMPS.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, rioaiim C. GATTl, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State oi Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovei'nents in Attachments for Automobile Tail Lamps; and T do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for automobile tail lamps, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel and simple device of this character adapted to be illuminated by the light rays passing through ie lateral or side opening of a tail lamp whereby to increase the visibility of the lamp or illuminate advertising matter.
ll ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction, eombination and arrangement oi: parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating the application of the attachment to an automobile tail lamp,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending vertically and centrally through the lamp and attacl'iment,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending horizontally and centrally through the lamp and attachment, and
Figure is a detail perspective view of the attachment.
Corresponding and like parts are. referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views of the drawings, by similar reference rhara'ctt-n's.
In the drawing 1. designates the body, 2 the lens, 3 the electric bulb, and at the lateral or side opening ol :1 well known type of automobile tail lamp.
The attachment comprises a casing 5 which, while it may be of any suitable contour, is preferably of crescent formation in outline and which embodies a concave-convex rear wall 6, a concavo-convex front wall 7 and an arcuate inner side wall 8. The rear Wall 6 and the front wall '4' are arranged with their concave sides in opposition, the

former being opaque and preferably made of metal and the latter t 'ansparent or translucent and preferably made off celluloid. The rear wall 6 is provided with an inner reflecting surface, and it and the side Wall 8 are provided with flanges 9 and 10, respectively, to removably secure the front wall "4" in place. The side wall 8 is provided between the walls '6 and 8 "ith an opening 11 and is terminally provided with barrels or sleeves 12. This wall is preferably made of metal and the end portions thereof are rolled to provide the larrels or sleeves l2. Arcuate attaching members or clamps 13 are pivotally connected to the side wall 8 through the medium of journals 1-1. Each clamp 13 and its journal 14: are preferably. made from a single length oi wire, and the free end of the clamp is provided with an eye or loop 15 and the corresponding end ol the journal with a retaining element 16.
The attachment is adapted to be secured to the tail lamp means of the clamps l3 and a bolt 16 passing through the eyes 15 in a manner to position the opening 11 in the side wall 8 of the att-aclnnent in registration with the opening 4 in the side wall of the lamp. The rays of the electric bulb 3 passing through the openings 4 and 11 will be reflected by the rear wall 6 through the front Wall 7. The front wall 7 may if desired be colored and may if desired be provided With the name of an automobile or any other advertising matter. As the attachment eX- tends laterally from and is illuminated by the electric bulb thereof, it increases the visibility of the tail lamp. As is readily ap parent, the attachment may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the tail lamp, and is simple, durable and inexpensive.
It should be understood that the drawing merely illustrative and does not pretend to give eXact proportions. Furthern'iore, the said drawing is illustrative of a pre ferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
"What is claimed is 1.. A lamp attachment comprising concavo-convex front and rear walls of crescont formation in outline. :in aiouzite side Wall provided between said front and real" walls with gin opening, and means adapted to secure the attzichn'ient to a lamp.
2. A lainp uttachi'nont con'ipi'ising conczwo-convex frontand rear 2111s of crescent formation in outline, an areuate side Wall provided between said front and rear walls with an opening, and al enate clamps pivotally connected to said side Wall. 10
In testimony whereof I afiix my signatnre.
AGATHA C. S. GATTI.
