This invention relates to an attachment for headlights and in accordance with the pres.- g
ent invention a device is provided which may be readily attached to headlights of existing types, and whereby the driver may readily ascertain whether or not the head lamp is illuminated.
Further, the attachment is of comparatively simple construction, requires no particular g skill for attaching it to the headlamp and is economical thereby making the same useful for advertising purposes.
The invention together with its numerous objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a front View of a motor vehicle equipped with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view through a head lamp casing having the attachment applied thereto, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 8'3 of F igme 2.
Referring indetail to the drawing it will be seen that my attachment is designated generally by the reference character 5 and is formed from a single length of metal or other suitable resilient material bent and folded so as to provide a substantially U-shaped clip 6, and indicia bearing plate 7 disposed forwardly of the clip 6 and connected at its upper end with one leg 6a of the clip by a flat horizontal plate like portion 8.
The plate portion 7 is in the nature of a suitable ornament as suggested in Figure l and on its front face may bear suitable advertising data, or the like. The horizontal connecting portion or web 8 is provided with an aperture 9 and has a flange 10 surrounding the aperture at the top of the plate. A button 11 is secured in operative position relative to the aperture 9 by the flange 10 as shown in Figure 3. Button 11 is formed preferably of colored glass or other translucent material.
The leg 66 of the clip 6 at the open end of the U is provided with a return bend thus forming a hook 12 adapted to engage over the peripheral edge of the headlight lens as sugested in Figure 2.
The back face 7 a of the part 7 is painted white or otherwise suitably treated to serve as a reflecting surface.
In actual practice the clip 6 is engaged with the flange of the usual headlight lens retaining ring 13 while the hook 12 is en- 'aged over the peripheral edge of the headlight lens 141 at the top thereof. (See Figure 2). With the attachment thus applied to the headlight it will be apparent that a portion of the light rays from the head lamp will be deflected upwardly through the button 11 and will be visible to the vehicle driver; thus by the illumination of the button 11 the driver may readily ascertain whether or not the headlight to which the attachment is applied is working properly. As suggested in Figure 1 each headlight will be provided with an I I attachment 5.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of further changes, modifications and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: l V
In combination with a headlight having a lens and a retaining ring for the lens; an indicator device comprising a reflector, a platelike web extending from the upper edge of the reflector at an angle thereto and provided with an aperture and a flange extending about said aperture, a translucent button confined within said flange, and a clip extending from said web remote from the reflector and at substantially right angles to said web, said clip being substantially U-shaped and adapted to receive between the sides thereof a portion of the lens retaining ring, and said clip at one side of the U and at the open end of the U being provided with a return bend forming a hook adapted to engage the peripheral edge of the lens between the peripheral edge of said lens and the retaining ring.
