AApplication ined February 27,1922. serial No. 539,502'.
To all wiz-0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID citizen of the United States, and a resident of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa., have invented a certain new Vuseful lVrench, or" which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide tion, the pipe will be firmly gripped, while when the wrench is moved in the other direction, the pipe will be released, the pivotal mounting oi the parts being of novel construction.
lVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side'elevation of a wrench embodying my invention. b
Figure 2 shows a top or plan view of the same.
Figure 3 shows an inverted plan view of said wrench.
Figure 4 shows a side elevation of a modified form of my wrench; and
Figure 5 shows an inverted plan ViewV of the modilied form'.
Generally speaking my improved wrench comprises a `handle and two jaw members, one of the jaw members being pivoted to the handle member, and the other jaw member being pivoted to the iirst jaw member, and having sliding and pivotal connection with the handle.
In the accompanying drawings whereby my invention is illustrated I have used the reference character to indicate, generally the handle of my improved wrench. The handle 10 has one end biiurcated and forming the spaced ears 11.
The shank 12, of a jaw member 13, is pivoted between the ears 11 in any suitable way, as for instance, by means of the bolt 14. The second jaw 15 is pivoted to the pin S. FLOWERS, av
13, in any suitable manner, as forrinstance, by means of the bolt 16. The jaw 15 has the bifurcated arms or shank members 17 which' are mounted on the bolt 16 and extend to positions on opposite sides of the handle 10. These arms or shanks 17 are-provided with parallel elongated slots 18.
The handle l() has a pin or pins 19k projected intothe slots 18. u The adjacent gripping faces of the jaws 13 and'15 may be curved and notched, as illustrated in Figure 1, or may be of any desired shape.
In the .practical use of my improved* wrench the parts may be moved to their relative positions as illustrated by dotted lines in Figure 1. The wrench is then placed where the pipe or nut, is between the gripping faces 20 of the jaws. The jaw 15 is then pulled against the nut or the like, andthe handle is swung from its dotted line position to its full line position shown in Figure 1, thus bringing the other jaw to position, where the nut or vthe like is rrnly gripped. Y
It will be seen that the harder the nut is to move, the tighter it will be gripped.
It should be noted that both jaws extend at an angle from the handle and that with a wrench of this kind it is easy to grip the iittings on a pipe located in acorner of a room. By turning the wrench over it may be used for turning a tting or a nut in either direction. The wrench is easily manipulated. It can be worked in small places much like a ratchet wrench because it will readily slip on a nut or the like when the handle is moved in the direction as for instance from its full line position to its dotted line position shown in Figure 1.
In Figures 4 and 5, I have shown a form of my invention slightly diiering from that illustrated in the first three figures, which form, however, shows the same principles of construction.
The handle 10 of the form shown in Figures 4 and 5 is the same as the handle 10 of the first form described. In the form shown in Figures 4 and 5 the shank 21 of the jaw 22 is pivoted between the ears 11- of the handle 10. The other jaw, instead of being formed with bifurcated shank elements is made with two parts or jaw members located on the opposite sides of the Shank 21 i :-.1;5
It should perhaps be noted that the jaw 13, of the first is wider than the shank 12, so as to be Ysubstantially 1 the same Width from side to side as the jaw 15.
The second or two part jaw of the form of the wrench' shown in Figures 4 and 5 comprises the jaw members 23, pivoted by means of bolts 24: to the shank 21 and having the curved shanks 24 provided with the curved slots 25, which receive a pin or pins 26, supported on a pin or pins 26 projecting from the handle 10.
The adjacent gripping faces of the jaws 22 and 23 may be notched as at 27 and it will be noted, that the faces 22 and 23 may slide past each other in the operation of the wrench so that even very small pipes or nuts may be gripped between the jaws of the wrench.
That shown in Figures 4 and 5 is practically the same as that already described for Some changes may be made in the details the forms shown in Figures 1 to 3.
and construction and arrangement of the parts of my improved Wrench without departing Jfrom the real spirit and purpose oi' my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my. claim any modified forms of construction or uses of mechanical equivalents, Which may reasonably be included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
A wrench having a handle, a aw member formed with a shank pivoted at its end to one end of said handle, a second jaw member pivoted to the first jaw member between the ends thereof, said second jaw member having a shank, a curved slot in said shank, said slot extending away from the second jaw member in a direction around and away from the pivot between the handle and rst jaw member, and a pin on said handle projected into said slot.
Des Moines, Iowa, January 31, 1922.
