Description

Patented Feb. 10, 1874.
Hawes UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE JOHN E. HODGKINS, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMB-IND BOvSONl-PADS AND LUNGA-PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,261.1,dated February 10, i874; application iiled October 8, 1.873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. HoDGKrNs, of Chelsea, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful article of manufacture, which may be termed a Combined Bosom-Iform and Lung- Proteetor; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a rear view, Fig. 3 a side view, Fig. 4c a vertical section, and Fig. 5 a longitudinal section, of it.
In such dra-wings, A represents the bosomform, B the lung-protector, and C C elastic shoulder-straps applied to them, all being formed and arranged in manner as shown.
The external shape of the bosom-form, as well as that of the lung-protector, may be varied from those represented without changing the character of the invention.
The said bosom-form and lung-protector are connected together at their upper edges only, to which may be fastened an ornamental edging or band, D. The lungprotector is a sheet of thick dannel, felt, or woollen cloth, which may be bound on its outer edge, the binding being shown at ci.' rlhe bosom-form, like a shirt-bosom, is constructed with plaits b b b, or it may be otherwise made; and, bcsides, it is to be padded or constructed with conveni-V ties, as shown at c c, to represent the breasts of a woman. rEhe shoulder-straps, shown at C C, I prefer to be elastic bands, connected at their lower ends to the bosom-form at its opposite edges, and at their upper ends to the opposite corners or termini of the junction of the combined bosom-form and lung-protector.r
In wearing the article, the lung-protector is to go down in rear of the breast portion of the chelnise of the wearer, the bosom-form being' arranged in front thereof, the whole article being supported by means of the shoulder'- straps, through which the arms of the wearer are to be inserted. By the shoulder-straps being elastic longitudinally, and connected at their lower ends to the bosom-form, they operate to hold the latter closely over the chemise and leave the lungprotector free to adapt itself to the surface of the body covered by it.
If desirable, the lung-protector may be made of two sheets of cloth connected at their edges and padded and quilted, but generally speak-` ing one sheet of thick iiannel cloth or felt will suffice.
The bosom-form by being thus combined with the lung-protector constitutes a ready and convenient means of sustaining the latter with reference to the chemise. The bosom-y form is to be constructed like various others in use, viz., with pockets to receive breast pads or stuffing. The article thus made has all the hygienic advantages of the common lung-protector, and, besides, presents those of a bosom-forni and chemisette.
I claiml. As a new article of manufacture, the bosom-form A and lung-protector B, combined, constructed, and arranged substantially as set forth.
2. The bosom-form A, the lung-protector B, and the shoulder-straps C C, arranged and combined substantially as specied.
JOHN E. HODGKINS.
