HELEN M. MILLAR, or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN QOSGIVl-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,921, dated October 21, 1873; application filed July 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HELEN M. MILLAR, of the city of Louisville, county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pads or Ladies Artificial Busts, of which the following is a specification:
This my invention consists in an artificial bust shown in the drawing, but is generally made of anylight cotton fabric, in the usual form, slightly stuffed with any light material to give the the lower part is made to extend around under the arms, with a strap over the shoulders to keep it in its place. These extensions are in tended to be used as pads to fill up the hollow part of the body under the arms of the person, where it is so difficult to make a ladys dress fit properly, and are kept in their places by means of straps over the shoulders, which renders them much more comfortable and reliable than when attached. to the dress or any other garment in the manner in which they are generally used. The object of this my inpads to makeup the deficiency in the body under the arms, in order to enable the dressmaker to make a more perfect fit of the dress or other garment without the necessity of substituting separate pads, which are always very difficult to keep in place, especially when attached to the dress or other garment; but by the use of this my invention all diificulty is obviated, from the fact that the busts and side pads are connected, and the whole is kept in place by means of the straps over the shoulders, which keep them inv their places inde pendent of any garment, which renders them more comfortable to the wearer, and less liable to get out of place, as is frequently the case. with those now in common use.
The drawing is a perspective view of the bust, showing the extension-pads under the 31131118- In the drawing, A A are the busts, all of which are made of any light cotton or other material, and in form as shown in the drawing. B B are the extension-pads used under the arms, which are made as above described. G O are the shoulder-straps for keeping them in place. These straps are generally made of gum or other elastic material.
Having thus fully described the drawing, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The extension-pads B B and shoulder-straps O G, in combination with the busts A A, when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
