UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
VILLIAM B. STARBUCK, OF NANTUCKET, MASSACHUSETTS.
HERNIAL TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,845, dated March 30, 1897. Application led November 25, 1895. Serial No. 570,064. (No model.)
To `all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. STAEBUCK, of Nantucket, in the county of. Nantucket and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Truss, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved truss which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to readily conform to the shape of the Wearers body.
The invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvemen t. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The improved truss is provided with a pad A, made pear-shaped, as indicated in Figs. l and 2, and formed with a back A', of soleleather or like flexible material, and sufficiently stiff to keep the pad in place, but adapted to readily bend and conform to the shape of the Wearers body.
The back A is protected by a covering A2, preferably of goatskin-leather and connected by silk stitches to the inner face A3, preferably made of lightcalfskin and forming, With the back A', a pocket stuffed with sheeps wool A4, as shown in Fig. 3. By making the pad-Casin g of leather, as described, it readily conforms to the shape of the part of the body with which it comes in contact. The stuffing of the pad-casing with wool leaves the pad soft and elastic until it is Worn ont. In using thin calfskin-leather for the inner face A3 the perspiration of the human body is not liable to penetrate to the lling of wool, thus preserving the latter in its natural state and preventing it from becoming damp and offensive. The body or belt strap B is connected at one end to a staple or eye C, attached to the back A', and the other or free end of the said belt-strap B is adapted to be hooked by a hook D to a ring E on the outer end of the eye C. The leg-strap F is rigidly secured to the small end of the pad and is adapted to bucklel onto the body-strap B at one side thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A truss, comprising a pear-shaped pad provided With a ring secured thereto by an eye or staple, a belt having an opening in one end through which the ring is passed to secure the strap to the pad, the other end of the strap being provided with a hook which after the belt is passed around the body of the wearer engages the said ring, and a legstrap secured to the smaller end of the pad and adapted to be connected to the belt at one side, substantially as described.
WILLIAM B. STARBUCK.
