Description

Patented Aug. 21, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. KREBS, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, SSIGNOR KREBS SAFETY RAZOR CORPORATION, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A [CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SAFETY RAZOR.
Application led February 3, 1923`v To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES II. Knees, a citizen et the United States, and resident el h/lilwaulcee, in the county of Milwaukee and State or lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description. thereof. l
My invention relates to new and. useful improvements in safety razorsa'nd in the detachable blades for use therewith.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide a simply constructed razor of this character which as the result of its few number of parts, can be inexpensively manufactured and will be vquite light in weight, this being particularly true 0i' the head.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a safety razor head ot relatively small size which will take a small blade, the result being that such a razor as this can be used in all restricted places, Vtor ins1; ance close beneath the nose, where it is im possible to employ a large razor to any advantage. ln this connection 1t is also an object to dispose the plane oi the blade at approximately o to the center line of the handle.
L further important object of the invention is to provide a blade seating head havh ing a resilient sheet metal blade holder permanently secured thereto which, by its spring action will effectively retain a* blade in place, while allowing it to be readily removed when necessary. r
It is likewise an important object ot this invention to provide a razor of this character which has an entirely open space be tween the guard and blade-supportiin g head, thereby allowing these parts to be easily cleansed oi lather and the like.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a' combined blade-supporting head and guard which can be stamped from a single piece of: sheet metal.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a detachable safety razor blade having attaching means to each on its op osite ends.
ith these objects in .view the invention resides in the novel features of construction,
combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly Serial No. 442,112.
describcdand claimed7 and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l represents a side .elevational view or a safety razor constructed in accoriilence with Vthe invention, the blade being omitted;
Figure Epis an end elevational view showing muorer particularly the headA and blade retaining means;
Figure l'is a substantially central sectional view taken transversely or' Vthe head;
Figure 4l is another end elevational view looking .from y a somewhat different angle `Enom the view shown in Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a plan View of the blade for use in this razor;
Figure (lis a view similar to Figure 3 olz a slightly modified iorm of my invention, and
Figure 7 is an end elevational view simito Figure il oit that torni of my invention depicted in Figure G.
lle'terring more particularly to the aecompanying drawing, it will be seen that my invention comprises'7 in its preferred embodiment, a handle 1 having an attaching shank 2, and means carried by the shank for supporting a blade 8. The main portion ol' this bl-adeesupporting means consists or a head 4r formed from an angular plate having an attaching flange 5 and Ia blade engaging flange or bed 6, the iirst Amentioned flange being secured to said shank 2 in -a suitable manner. As ind'cated in .Figure .l the blade seating surface of the bed (3 is in a plane substantially at an angle oi' 450 with a plane containing the axis of the handle 1,
.i The free edge of the llange of the head 4 forming the bed G has a guard 7 `formed integrally therewith and the same includesl a plurality ort guard teeth S and connecting legs 9. One ol these legs 9 is disposed at each endA olf the guard and serves to connect the same with the bed 6. As shown in F igures l and 3, `the teeth 8 of the guard intersect fthe plane of the face of the bed 6 approximately at right angles and their tree ends are spaced from the adjacent edge of said bed the distance that the blade 3 projects beyond. the latter.
In that form oi my invention, illustrated .in Figures l to` 5, the back l0 of the guard connecting the legs 9 is a strip which is folded up@ `aan' longitudinally 'off-adyeo length as indicated at 1l whereby to provide a re-entorccment. lThe bent over portion of the back obviously may -be disposed inwardly or outwardly oi' the guard as indi"- cated in Figures l and 3, or extended;A at right angles to the teeth and the other portion of the back. Obviously such aigre-enforcement provides considerable strength and rigidity and insuresfthe guardbeing maintained in vperfect alignment with the cutting edge othe'blade.-`
The yblade""holde`r for the blade 3 consists of a resilient sleetfmetal plate 1Q oi:`'light gauge and having considerable natr-al spring action7 the same having anatta'ching l'lange. 13 which `o'verlies the". attaching? portion 5 of the head and is permanently se-vv cured thereto as by the'frivets lll.y Theblade engaging 'flange 'l5 oi the-blade holder overlies'fthebed G and is curved int-such amannerthat'i'ts Afree edge "turned in toward and engages the tree edgefof said bed-'ex-` cept `when a blade is in place,'underfvv1hich conditions the latter is i firmly pressed against the -former. ln additionlt thiseontactbetiveen the edge of" thespring' blade holder and the blade, the latter is heldv in4v Contact "With'the' bed Gat its inner ed'geas shown inFigur'e The opposite free corners of the blade-engaginghanged-5 are providedf with lips" I6' andfl respectively, and the endvtlier'eoi. adj acentsaidf' lip lhas a 'notch 18. 2. In a razor, a blade seating head, a ren silient blade holder rigidly secured along the rear longitudinal edge portion of the head, the other longitudinal edge vportion being free and urged toward the head Whereby to detine a blade receiving recess between the seating surface of the head and the inner surface of the blade holder, a blade insertable between the head and blade holder with its front cutting edge aligned With re spect to the other longitudinal edge of the head by the rear longitudinal edge of the blade engaging the rear portion of the blade holder throughout substantially its entire length, a stop finger at one end of the space and partially Closing the saine, and a projeetion on the inner end of the blade and engageable behind said stop finger, said blade being inserted longitudinally between the blade holder and head until said projection engages behind the stop linger and said blade being removed by swinging the outer end of the blade on an are with said projeetion pivoting on said stop finger.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of 'Wisconsin CHARLES H; KREBS.
