Description

S. M. KATTELL SAFETY RAZOR Sept. s, 1925. 1552,488
Filed July 51. 1924 Wtoz Patented Sept. 8, 1925 UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
STANLEY M. KATTELL, or sYRAoUsE, NEW; YORK, ASSIGNOR- To THE snAv-RT n SAFETY RAZOR CORPORATION, or PATGHOGUE, NEW YonK, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
SAFETY RAZOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY M. KATTELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains t make and use the same.
This invention relates to safety razors and more particularly to that type of safety razor generally known as the hoe razor.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved symmetrical razor of the hoe type; to enable the blade to be carried at all times in proper relation to the guard, to thus avoid one end or the other of the blade being unprotected by the guard; to enable the blade to slide longitudinally of itself into place; to provide means for limiting insertion of said blade as to position the same symmetrically to frictionally engage the blade and prevent the same from becoming inadvertently displaced or removed; to pro vide for readily grasping the blade and withdrawing it from the guard; to enable the razor to be easily cleaned; to provide means in connection with a razor for holding a blade for stropping or honing the same; to utilize the handle of the razor for this purpose; to provide for sliding the blade into the handle and frictionally hold the same therein; to provide locking means for holding the handle removably; to secure simplicity of construction and operation, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved razor looking at what may be termed the front of the same, and showing a razor blade in place;
Figure 2 is a similar view with the blade removed and a portion of the razor broken away to disclose a hole and rivets beneath;
Figure 3 is an elevation of the razor looking at what may be termed the back of the razor and showing a blade in position;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 3;
Figure 5 isa sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Figure 6 is an elevation of the handle alone showing the same supporting a razor blade for stropping; and Figure 7 is a crosssectional view on line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a flat socket having a longitudinally extending slot 2, this slot being left in bending the socket into form from sheet metal. Projecting forwardly from the socket at one end is a pair of flanges 15 which are bent intermediate their ends to form Wings 5 to which the head .25 of the razor is fixedly secured. The head has a bent-over flange 7 having'its edge bent in as at 27 whereby the head 9 of the razor blade 8 may be snugly and firmly held. The edge of the razor blade is guarded on one side by a comblike guard 17 extending from the head 25. The back of the head 25 is cut away at its ends as at 11 to permit the blade to be grasped in Withdrawing the same. At one end of the head 25 is a stop lug 10 to limit the insertion of the blade therein. A hole 16 in the head 25 assists in cleaning the razor.
The socket 1 is adapted to receive the hollow split stem 12 of the handle 3. The stem is held in place in the socket by a spring clip 4 which is formed at the end of the socket by a bent-over finger integral with the socket. The clip enters the end of the hollow stem 12 when the latter is pushed fully into the socket. The stem 12 when removed from the socket is adapted to serve as a holder for the razor blade when it is desired to sharpen the same as shown in Fig. 6. If desired, the stem may be slotted as at 14.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1, In a razor of the character described having a guard portion, a handle and a socket or holder for said handle comprising a section of sheet metal bent into tubular shape, with the edges spaced from each other forming a slot, one end of said holder being formed with outturned flanges lying flatwise against said guard, and a bent over portion of the sheet metal within the socket at the flanged end of the holder being adapted to act as a spring detent for the said handle.
2. In a razor, a guard adapted to hold a blade, a handle socket to Which said guard is secured, a handle having a hollow stem adapted to he received in said socket, and means for impositively securing said stem Within the socket comprising a spring clip on the socket, said clip adapted to enter into the open end of the stem and frictionally hold the stem in the socket.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
STANLEY M. KATTELL.
