To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, NATHAN KASDAN, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New 5 York, and DANIEL PoLLAox, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in vanity boxes or cases of the class "adapted to contain a mirror and hold a compact of toilet powder and a compact of rouge, with the necessary pads or pufi's, and said invention consists in thenovel features and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

One object of the invention is to provide a vanity case of the class referred to which shall be very convenient of use whether it is desired to expose the powder compact alone or both the powder compact and rouge compact, the mirror remaining fiat within the cover of the box or case, with its face exposed, when the powder compact is exposed by opening said cover and resting on said cover at an angle when the rouge compact is exposed by the outward movement of the mirror from its initial position with! in the opened cover.

Another purpose of the invention is to provide a vanity case or box of the class referred to in which the parts thereof are durable and firmly seated so as to act efficiently and in which the parts are so associated as to avoid rattling thereof.

The box or case comprises a bottom or body portion adapted to receive a powder compact and a flat pad or puff for use therewith, a cover hinged at the lower edge of its skirt portion to the upper edge of the rim of said body portion, a sheet metal disk frame of special construction fitted within said cover and having an eccentrically disposed flanged pocket to admit a rougevcompact and its pad or pufi', and a mirror hingedly connected by an interposed frame with said metal disk, said mirror adapted to lie within said cover close said rouge pocket and also to close the upper end of the chamber holding the powder compact and its pad when the cover carrying the mirror is turned to closed position. en the cover is first opened the powder chamber or body of the box or case is fully exposed and the mirror remains stationary within the cover in position for convenient use. If thereafterit should be deslred to use the rouge, the mirror is swung forwardly from the cover and stood in an inclined position so as to expose the rouge compact and be in position for convenient use.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

In the drawings 20 denotes the bottom or bodymember of the box or case, 21 the cover member thereof, 22 a sheet metal disk or frame seated within said cover, 23 a mirror normally lying upon said disk or frame and within said cover, and 24 a frame of yoke form hinged to the back of said mirror at the transverse} central portion thereof and to said disk adjacent to one edge thereof and serving as a link connecting the mirror and disk together and permitting the mirror to lie flat upon the disk or to be raised therefrom anddisposed at an angle thereto.

The cover 21 conforms generally with the body 20 and at the lower edge of its skirt 25 is hinged, at 29, to the upper part of the rim 30 of the body 20.

The disk or frame 22 is in one integral piece of sheet metal and formed with an edge flange 31 and an eccentrically disposed circular opening 32 surrounded by a wall or flange 33 which engages the inner surface of the top of the cover 21 and therewith forms a chamber or pocket for a rouge-compact 34 and its pad or puff 35. The wall or flange 33 is slit to form spring-fingers 36 adapted to lightly grip the base 37 which carries the compact 34 and thereby hold the compact within the chamber or pocket therefor. The edge flange 31 of the disk or' frame 22 is adapted to be sprung into the cover 21 and bind against the skirt 25 thereof, thereby securing the disk or frame in firm position. The free edge of the flange 31 engages the inner surface of the topv of the cover 21 and thereby cooperates with the flange 33 in maintaining the disk or frame 22 solidly in parallel position with relation to said cover. The face 38 of the disk or frame 22 is offset inwardly and thereby an outwardly projecting beading 39 is formed along the peripheral edge of said face and a corresponding beading 40 is formed along the periph eiral he headings 39, 40 stiffen the disk 22 and add to the appearance ofthe article, and in addition the beading 40 permits the chamber or pocket for the rouge-compact to be of maximum depth. The outer edge of the beading 39 sets inwardly to a slight extent from the skirt of the cover 21. so as to leave room for the upper inwardly offset edge of the rim of the body 20 to enter the cover when the case or box is closed. The inner exposed surface of the heading 39 is utilized to cooperate with spring-flanges 41 formed on the rim of the mirror 23 for yieldingly binding said. mirror in position within the cover 21 and parallel with the disk 22. I

The inwardly offsetting of the face 38 of the disk 22 results in the formation in said disk of a flat chamber which is utilized to receive the hinged yoke or link 24 when the mirror is closed within the cover 21.

The mirror 23 is a plain circular mirror and has a metal back plate 42 and a metal edge-rim 43 from which the aforesaid spring-flanges 41 are formed. The yoke or link 24 is of sheet metal and at one end has widely spread apart arms 44 hinged to the back plate 42 of the mirror 23 and at; its

other end closely adjacent arms 45 hinged to the face 38 of the disk 22 near the forward edge thereof and parallel with the hinge 29 connecting the body 20 and cover 21 of the case or box. The arms 44 have pintles or trunnions 46 formed on them and these pintles or trunnions are freely held in loopbearings 47 pressed out from the back plate 42- of the mirror, and the arms 45 have pintles or trunnions 48 formed on them and these pintles or trunnions are freely held in loop-bearings 49 pressed out from the face 38 of the disk 22. When the mirror 23 is in closed position within the cover 21, the yoke or link 24 lies against the face 38 of the disk 22, the arms 44 of the yoke or link then straddling the beading 40 and allowing the back of the mirror to lie close to the chamber or pocket for the rouge-compact 34 and its pad 35 and keep said pad in place.

When the mirror 23 is closed within the cover 21 and against the pad 35 and beading 40, the spring-flanges 41 engage the inner forward edge with a lip 50 which serves asv a thumbpiece by which the mirror may be withdrawn from its closed position'within the cover 21 to its open position exposing the rouge-compact.

When the vanity case or box is in cloesd condition the mirror closes .both the chamber for the powder-compact and the chamber for the rouge-compact and holds the pads for said compacts in place. When the cover- 21 is turned upwardly from the body 20, the powder-compact becomes exposed and the mirror 23 remains in the cover 21 in convenient position for use. When thereafter it is desired to expose the rouge-compact the user will, with the use .of the lip or thumbpiece 50 lift the forward edge of the mirror and then draw the mirror upwardly and forwardly from over the rouge-compact and then incline the mirror to rest at its lower edge on the face of the disk 22 forwardly of the compact, in which position the mirror can be conveniently used. When the mirror'is given this inclined position, it will be supported at its back by the hinged yoke or link and the yoke. or link will have a When the use of the vanity 'case has ceased, the mirror will be returned over the disk 22 and pressed downwardly into the beading 39 and thereupon the cover 21 will be closed over the body 20.

What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A vanity box or case comprising a body portion having a rim and adapted to receive a powder compact and its pad, a cover having a skirt hinged to the rim of said body portion, a disk frame fitted within said cover and having a walled opening adapted to receive a rouge-compact and its pad, a mirror and a link hingedly connecting the back of said mirror at a middle portion thereof to! the forward portion of said disk frame, said mirror being between said disk frame and the body of the box and adapted when the box is closed, to close the outer ends of the chambers for said compacts, and said link permitting the mirror, when the box is open, to be lifted at its forward edge and drawn upwardly and forwardly to expose the rouge-compact and be given an inclined position against the link at the forward edge of the open cover.

2. A vanity box or case as claimed in claim 1, in which the walled opening for the rouge-compact is closed at its inner end by the lower surface of said cover and is eccentrically disposed in the disk frame, being adjacent to the hinge-edge of the box and adapted to be wholly exposed when the mirror is given its inclined position.

3. A vanity box or case as claimed in claim 1, in which the disk frame has an outwardly projecting peripheral beading and in which the mirror is adapted to seat within said beading and has spring-flanges at its rim to bind against said beading and yieldingly hold the mirror against its seat.

4. A vanity box or case as claimed in claim 1, in which the face of said disk frame is set inwardly to form a peripheral out wardly projecting beading along its outer edge and a like beading around the edge of said walled opening and also to form a chamber to receive flatwise said link when the mirror is in closed position, and in which said mirror is adapted to seat within said outer edge beading and has springiianges at its rim to bind against said head mg and yieldingly hold the mirror against adjacent arms formed with pintles held in loops pressed from said disk frame, said spread apart arms also being formed with 'pintles held in loops pressed from the back of said mirror.

6. A vanity box or case comprising a body portion having a rim and adapted to receive a powder compact and its pad, a cover having a skirt hinged to the rim of said body portion, a disk frame fitted within said cover and having a walled opening adapted to receive a rouge-compact and. its pad, a mirror and a link hingedly connecting the back of said mirror to said disk frame, said mirror being between said disk frame and the body of the box and adapted when the box is closedg to close the outer ends of the chambers for said compacts, said disk frame having an edge beading within which the mirror is adapted to seat, said mirror having spring-flanges at its rim to bind against sald beading and yieldingly hold the mirror against its seat, and said link permitting the mirror, when'the box is open, to be lifted from its seat and moved forwardly from over the rouge-compact and inclined for use.
