This invention relatesto certain improvements in small cases or boxes for holding cosmetics, which have now become generally known in the art as vanity cases. 7 These boxes or cases are used for carrying cosmetics, such as rouge or powder, andto serve their purpose must be small, so that they can be readily carried in a pocket or handbag of the user and must be ofattractive appearance to be saleable. In certain types of these boxes, the box is designed to be used once and then discarded,

that is, after the powder or other cosmetic has been used up, the box is thrown away;

Such boxes, however, must be provided with a reflecting surface so that the user can apply the cosmetic as desired. In these boxes, designed for use only as long as the original powder content lasts, cheapness in manufactureis very important as such boxes are sold at a low price and the boxes must be so constructed as to be cheaply made and assembled,

so as to afi'ord a margin of profit to the maker.

Such boxes, therefore, must beof as few parts as possible and such boxes so arranged as to be readily and quickly assembled.

It is the especial object of the preferred invention to provide a small vanity box or case capacitated to hold cosmetics such as a powder compact and a mirror, with a simple and effective means for holding the mirror in place, such mirror holding means also acting as a hinge for uniting the body and the cover of the box.

With this and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations, which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and.

the box selected to illustrate the invention is a circular box, although it will be understoodthat the invention is not to be restricted tothis particular shape. The box shown, however, comprises a body 1, having a pcripheral side wall 2. The particular box shown is capacitated to carry. a cosmetic shown -in the. form of a powder ,compact marked 3, which is secured in the body of the box in any suitable manner, as for instance, by mounting it into the bottom, which. is pro- 1 compact in place.

Pivotally associated with this box is a cover 5 havinga peripheral flange 6 which is adapted to frictionally engage within the wall 2 of the' box body 1. Theiflangefi of the cover is extended to form a peripheral head 7, and seated in this bead is'a reflecting sur-' face shown in the form of a polished metal disk 8. 1 i

According to the invention, a simple means is provided for pivotally associating the body and the cover,'which also actsto hold themirror securely in the bead. In the particular construction, shown for effecting this purpose, this means is a single spring Wire 9 which is snapped into the groove or vvided with ridges 4 which act to secure the head over the face or top of the mirror 8 and acts to hold the mirror securely in place,

This wire extends substantially around the groove and passes through a hinged knuckle 10which is conveniently formed by bending over a projecting portion formed on the side wall 2 ofthe body. 1. The cover is cut away as indicated at 11 to receive this turned over portion through which the pintle p wire passes, as clearly shown in Figure 1' V in dotted lines.

It willbeseen that a very simple, efiective construction for producing a Vanity case or box capacitated to hold the cosmetic has been produced by thepresent invention, and While the invention has been shown in its preferred form, it will beunderstood that certain vav. riations maybe made in the shape and in the specific construction ofthebox WlllhOlltdG parting from the invention as defined in the appended claim.

What is claimed is: In a vanity case, a body capacitated to hold a cosmetic and having a peripheral Wall, a

projection on the wall bent'toform a, hinge:

knuckle a cover having a peripheral wall formed with-a bead or groove, a mirror in the cover substantially the size thereof anda single spring Wire seated in andextending around the groove engaging substantially the Whole periphery of the mirror and locking it in place and passing through the hinge knucklefor pivotally associating the cover and body, and means for holding the body and cover in closed relation.
