Application filed August 23, 1921. Serial No. 494,501.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS or THEAGT F MARCHB, 1921, 41 srar. L, 1313.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES SAMUEL KING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 227239 Tooley Street, London, 5 England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Books in Detachable Covers (for which I have filed applications in Great Britain on March 20, 1919, Patent No. 136,738 of 1919, and on June 23, 1920, Patent No. 157,689 of 1920), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means for securing books in detachable covers, such as are commonly employed to protect ledgers and other books when in use and to obviate the necessity of providing the books with strong permanent bindings.
Preferably I cut the front of the cover of the book along two lines in its upper half parallel to its front edge so that one of the straps may be passed through the loop so formed, and I make similar cuts in the lower half so that the other strap may be passed through the loop so formed. In both cases slits at right angles to the cuts may be made in the cover to receive flapsv formed on the straps. The back cover of the book is similarly cut to receive the two other straps. My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. Figure l is a plan of a book with the front board of the detachable cover opened, Figure 2 shows a plan of a portion of the detachable cover and Figure cover of the book when the straps are secured to the back. Figure 4c shows part of the inside of the front permanent cover of a book secured to the front board of a detachable cover, and Figure 5 is a similar view showing the parts before the permanent cover is secured, the straps being secured to the top and bottom edges of the detachable cover.
In Figures 1 to 3 a is the front board of a detachable cover and b is the front board of the permanent cover of a book. 0 0 are straps fastened to the back of the detachable permanent cover and d d are cuts made through the permanent cover 1) parallel to its back forming loops 6 6 through which 3 a plan of a portion of the front permanent urel. The end of each strap'c is cutaway L so as to form flaps f f, g g, andslits h h, j j
are formed in the permanent cover of the book through which the flaps f f and g g The back board is respectively are passed. similarly provided with straps by'means of which the back of the permanent cover can be secured to it.
In Figures 4 and 5 A is the front board of a detachable cover and B is the front of the permanent cover of a book. C is a strap secured to the top of the inside of the board A and D is a similar strap secured to the bottom thereof. E E are cuts made through the permanent cover B parallel to the top and bottom edges thereof, forming loops F and G through which the straps C and D can be passed. The end of the stra C is cut away so as to form two flaps H one on either side, andthe end of the strap D has formed in it two slits I so that when the strap D has been passed through the loop G and the strap C through the loop F so that the end of the strap C lies above the end of the strap D, the flaps H may be tucked in through the slits I. Pockets J at the corners of the board A receive the cover two on each side thereof and four loops on the permanent cover of the book extending parallel to the edges through which the straps pass.
3. The combination of a book having a.
permanent cover, a detachable cover therefor, four straps secured to the detachable cover and four loops on the permanent cover of the book through which the strapspass,
two loops being in the upper half of each part ofthe permanent cover and two loops in thelow elf halfiof each thereof. w
4e'Tlie cornbination of'a book having a permanent cover, a detachable cover therefor, straps: secured to the detachable cover flaps on each strap and cuts in the permanent cover of the book extending parallel to the front edges'throiigh"Whi'ch' the straps pass and adapted to receive the flaps.
5. The combinatiorf'o'f'a book'havinga permanent coyer, a detachable covertherefor, straps seclir edto the detachable cov er, cuts in the permanent cover of .the book extending parallel to "the front edges through which the straps pass, flaps on the straps and slits at right angles to the cuts to receive the flaps. v
6. "The combination ofa bo'ok having a permanent cover, a detachable cover therefor, straps on the detachable cover and means forsecuring the straps in such a position that they hold the back and front 'ofthepermanent cover to the back and front of the detachable cover.
lntestiinony thatI claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my D 21-1116 this eighth da of "August 1921.
