Description

PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BIILER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMFRVEMENT IN VAPOR-BATHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1@.'2,7167, dated September 16,1873; application filed July 30, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BI'iLER, M. D., of New York city, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Baths, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in the arrangement of a bath for directing medicinal or medicated vapors in their most concentrated and dense form over the feet, legs, and back of the patient, and is an improvement of the vaporbath for which Letters Patent were granted to me on the 25th day of December, 1855, the name in said Letters Patent being erroneously spelled Buhler instead of Biiler! In the accompanying drawing, Fig. I represents a longitudinal section of a bath embodying my invention. Fig. II is a top view of the same; and Fig. III is a cross-section at line 2 3, Fig. II.
A is the bath, having a movable cover,-B, hinged on one side, as well as one of its sides, A, made in two parts and hinged together to facilitate getting in and out of the tub. In this bath-tub A shelves or boards 0, D, and E are arranged, the shelves 0 being for the feet and the shelf D for the body, while the shelf E is for the support of the head. The shelves 0 and D are perforated. The movable cover B has an aperture, a, for the patients face. F is the retort, placed between the shelves 0, near the bottom of the bath, and is heated by a spirit-lamp, G. From the top of the retort, which is closed, pipes an pass down the sides and under the shelves C.
When the patient is in the bath-tub and the retort is heated to produce the medicinal or medicated vapors, the vapors issuing therefrom pass under the shelves 0, through the perforations, around his feet and legs, and then under the shelf D, through the holes in the same, all over his back. The face being pressed against the opening a in the cover will allow the patient to breathe fresh air during the operation.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of a bath-tub, A, with a hinged side, A, and cover B provided with an opening, a, in combination with perforated shelves 0 and D, and retort F having pipes at a passing under the shelves (1, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
