CHARLES JANSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
- IMPROVEMENT IN VAPOR-BATHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0- 200,916, dated March 5, 1878; application filed February 14, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES lumen, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vapor-Bath, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved vapor-bath, and Fig. 2 a bottom view of the same with base removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish for the treatment of rheumatic, skin, and other diseases an improved vapor-bath, by which either the whole body or any part thereof may be exposed to the influence of steam or medicated vapors, so as to admit a more successful treatment of the same by a higher degree of temperature.
The invention consists of a vapor apparatus which is adapted in shape either to the entire body or to any part thereof, and constructed of outer closed and interior perforated walls, forming compartments, to which steam is supplied by suitable pipes.
Referring to the drawing, A represents my improved vapor-bath, which is constructed with a hinged front door, B, for admitting the entrance of the person into the apparatus. The upper part is provided with a tightly-fitting adjustable neck-band or collar, 0, of elastic material, that prevents the escape of va pors.
The bottom section and side sections of the apparatus are made of double walls, of which the outer walls are closed, the inner perforated.
The door may also be made of double W3.-llS, with interior perforations, if desired.
The double walls of the side and door sections, as well as of the bottom section, form separate compartments by means of dividingstrips, to which the steam or vapor is admitted through connecting pipes at, extending from a steam-drum, D, of the bottom compartment to each side compartment, so that the steam passes directly through the holes of each wall to the interior of the apparatus.
The water of condensation is collected and drawn off in any suitable manner.
The steam-drum D receives its steam-supply from any suitable generator, the supply being regulated by a stop-cock.
The apparatus may also be made on a smaller scale, and adapted to the neck, arm, leg, or other part of the body, the double sections of the same being hinged or otherwise connected, and the openings through which the parts protrude tightly fitted by stuffed collars to the parts to be treated, so that the vapors are allowed to act on the part inclosed by the apparatus, producing thus the local treatment of the same. 7
As the steam issues on the entire surface of the apparatus at uniform temperature by means of the double walls and exit-perforations a higher temperature on the entire body, as well as on the several parts, may be produced, and a very successful application of the steam and medicated vapors be made without any annoyance in breathing.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent-- 1. A vapor-bath consisting of sections with double walls fitted to the entire body or a part of the same, the inner walls being perforated to admit the free exit of steam or vapors, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A vapor bath consisting of sections with double walls fitted to inclose the entire body or a part of the same, the sections being separately supplied with steam or vapors, and the inner walls perforated for the exit of the steam, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
