APPARATUS FOR APPLYING DRY HOT AIR TO THE FACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed November 20,1906. Serial No. 344,346.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WrLpIAM LEE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Applying DrylHot Air to the Face, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for treating the skin of the face by the application thereto of heated air, either medicated or otherwise, and the object .of the invention is the provision of means in an apparatus of this character for readily varying the temperature of the air.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means permitting the person being treated to breathe the outside air during treatment.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is shown and wherein like numerals of reference refer to similar parts in the several views. In the drawings: Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved apparatus, parts being shown in elevation; 2 is a rear elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a front view of the air heating chamber, parts being broken away; Fig. 4 is a detailed View of the mouth piece, and Fig. 5 is a front view of the flexible hood with the mouth piece secured therein. y
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, a designates the air heating chamber, which is preferably ormed of sheet metal and in the form of a hollow cylinder closed at the rear end. The air heating chamber is adjustably supported in a horizontal position by means of blocks or studs K and K which are secured to the rear or closed end of the cylinder by means of suitable nuts L/and L, and which are apertured to loosely encircle a guide-rod S extending upwardly from a suitable base or support E. The blocks or studs K and K, are provided with suitable thumb screws I-I/ and H, which are adapted to impinge the guide-rod S to hold the air heating chamber a in various position of vertical adjustment thereon. The air heating chamber a is provided on its under side near the closed end thereof with an opening G to permit the admission of heated air thereinto, said air being heated by an alcohol or other suitable lamp supported on the base E below the opening G.
C designates a heat reflector which is secured within the air heating chamber a above the opening G therein and is designed to direct the air to the open end of said chamber. The heat reflector, which is preferably formed of sheet metal, is in the form of an arch shaped plate and is closed at its rear end, the lower edges of the sides and end of said plate being perferably formed with Iianges so that it may be readily secured to the interior of the air heating chamber. Secured to the end wall of the heat reflector C and extending longitudinally thereof is a shelf C@ which serves as a support for the medicine when it is desired to use medicated vapor.
I designates a iiexible hood, preferably formed of some close woven material, which is designed to be secured over the open end of the air heating chamber and to envelop the face of the patient. The hood I i's preferably in the formk of an open ended tube, the ends of which are provided with draw strings to facilitate its attachment respectively to the end of the air heating chamber and the face of the patient. O designates a tube which extends transversely of the flexible 'hood I and the ends of which project through suitable openings in said hood into the outer air. Extending laterally from the central portion of the tube O and communicating therewith is a mouth piece M which is adapted to be utilized by the patient for breathing purposes. From this construction it will be apparent that the hood I may be'secured to the face of the patient in such a manner so as to entirely exclude the outer air and a very high degree of heat may be employed, as the patient is permitted during treatment, to breathe the cooler outside air.
It will be apparent that the temperature of the air employed in carrying out the treatment may be readily varied by adjusting the air heating chamber a on the guide-rod S.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form of construction shown in the drawings, as it is obvious that many minor changes might be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, an air heating chamber closed at one end and provided with an opening in the body portion thereof for the admission of heated air, a deector positioned over said opening and serving,- to deliect the heated air to the open end of the air chamber, and a shelf carried by said deector.
2. In a device of the character described, an air heating chamber closed at one end and havingan opening therein for the admission of heated air, an arched reiector plate positioned above the opening in the air chamber, said defiector plate being provided with a wall closing the rear end thereof, and a shelf` secured to the end wall of the deeetor plate.
3. A hood for an apparatus of the character described comprising a Iiexible open ended tube provided adjacent one end thereof with means for attaching the same to the outlet portion of the apparatus and adjacentthe other end with a mouth piece positioned within the tube and passing through the wall thereof to communicate with the outer air.
4. A hood for an apparatus of the character described comprising a exible open ended tube provided adjacent one end thereof with means for attaching the same at the deiect the vapors arising therefrom to the open end of the 1U chamber` 1n testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
