J. E. WENMAN. Y LAMP CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT FOR MBDIGAL- VAPORIZING, AND
HEATING PURPOSES.
No, 491,827. Patented. Feb. 14, 1893.
ATTORNEYS.
ATENT JOSEPH WENMAN, OF EAST LIVERPOOL, OHIO.
LAMP-CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT FOR MEDICAL VAPORIZING AND HEATINS PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,827, dated February 14, 1893.
Application filed May 9. 1892. Serial No. 432.349. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. WENMAN, of East Liverpool,in the county of Oolumbiana, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Chimney Attachments for Medical Vaporizing and Heating Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a perforated metal tube and attached cap devicedesigned to rest upon an ordinary glass lamp chimney for medical vaporizing and heating purposes, substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in elevation of a glass lamp chimney in part, with my improved attachment or device applied, and showing, by dotted lines, a retort seated thereon or in with attached tube for medical vaporizing purposes; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view of the same upon the line 2-2 in Fig. 8, looking in direction of the arrow at; Fig. 3, a top or plan View; and Fig. 4, a horizontal section upon the line 4-4 in Fig. 2.
A is a metal tube having two rows of perforationsfarranged one above the other in its sides, said tube being of a little larger diameter than the top of the glass lamp chimney B upon which it rests. O is a downwardly flaring cap attached to said tube at or near its top and surrounding the tube. This cap, which may be called a cooling cap, serv es to protect the rubber inhaling or vaporizing tube 1) of a medical vaporizing retort D carried by the tubeAfrom beingburned should said flexible or rubber tube come in contact with the metal tube A. Said cap also prevents the heated air and gases passing up the lamp chimney into the tube A from too freely escaping through the upper rows of perforations 0 in said tube, yet not interfering with the necessary ventilation or free passage of outside air. In fine, the cap 0 keeps the heat in the tube A so that the retort or vessel seated on or in said tube will be heated quicker than without such cap.
The metal tube A that rests by means of internal projections or hooks cl upon the glass lamp chimney, has two rows of side perforations 0, 0', one row above the other to admit of an adequate supply of air,-so that almost any lamp can be used for heating purposes which the tube A, virtually forming an extension of the lamp chimney, is designed for. In addition to the internal projections or rests d, said tube A is further provided with an upper series of internal vprojections or rests 01 above the rows of apertures c. This upper series of projections 01' is intended to support or carry the retort D which is made of fireproof material, such, for instance, as porcelain or granite, and is intended to vaporize medical liquids for the treatment or cure of throat and lung ailments, the Vapor being conveyed or directed as required by the flexible tube b. The projections cl d are formed by punching the material of the tube A inwardly and thus the apertures c c are simultaneously formed. There is also a series of lateral projections 01 extending outward from the top of the chimney extension or tube A. These projections will serve as rests for larger vessels for general or special heating purposes, when the chimney extension is not used for generating vapor in a medical retort as stated.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A lamp chimney attachment, comprising an open ended tube A having an upper and lower series of projections (1 cl punched from its outer side inwardly and the series of apertures formed by the removal of the material forming the said projections, substantially as set forth.
2. A lamp'chimney attachment, comprising an open ended tube having upper and lower apertures, upper and lower internal projections and the external depending conical cap C secured at its contracted end to the upper supporting projections cl (1', upper outer sup- 1o edge of the said tube, substantially as set ports or projections d and a downwardly forth. flaring cap 0, essentially as and for the pur- 3. A lamp chimney attachment for medical poses herein set forth. 5 vaporizing and heating purposes, constructed substantially as described, of an independent JOSEPH E. VVENMAN. tube A, of larger area than the top of the \Vitnesses:
