NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES DEAVS, OF YORK, N. Y., EASSIGNOR TO ARCHER AND PAN- COAST MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKE-BELLS FOR GASALIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,634, dated August 12, 1873; application filed July 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES DEAVS, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Bells for Gasaliers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. j My invention consists, first, in a concavoconvex smoke-bell made of any suitable material and provided with one or more openings through it for permitting the heat and smoke to escape, and with shutters or deflecting-plates over such openings for deflecting the smoke and heat off in a lateral direction, so as to prevent the same from ascending to injure those portions of the gasalier which are above such openings. It also consistsin the combination with such concavo-convex smokebell of deflecting-disks, one or more, arranged above it. It further consists in the combination with such concavo-convex smoke-bell of an inverted cone, one or more, arranged above it.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows my improvement adapted to the smokedeflecting plates in ordinary use, the smokebell port-ion of the device being shown in see tion; and Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the said smoke-bell portion applied to an inverted deflecting-cone, the latter being shown in section.
A designates a concavo-convex smoke-bell. This may be made of any suitable material, but I prefer to stamp it out of sheet-brass with B B are two openings made through the bell on opposite sides of the same. These openings are to facilitate the escape of heat or smoke from the bell. The said openings B B are provided with deflecting-plates C C, which are applied to and arranged above said openings for throwing the heat and smoke off obliquely, so as to prevent the same from ascending to or reaching the upperpartof the harp of a drop-light or other portions of the chandelier over the burner.
In Fig. 1 I have shown my smoke-bell A B C as combined with two of the ordinary deflecting-disks D D now in use; and in Fig. 2 I have shown the said smoke-bell A B 0 combined with an inverted conicaldefiector, E.
The smoke-bell A B C is a neat and efficient device in itself; but I prefer to combine with it the deflecting-plates D D or the conical deflector E, so as to absolutely prevent heat arising to burn and injure the portions of the gasalier or fixture which may be located above it.
The device should be provided with a stem, F, and ahook or other suitable means whereby it can be secured in the proper position over the gas-burner.
My invention produces a very reliable smokebell for gas-fixtures, a device especially well adapted for use in a harp drop-light, where, in view of the limited space vertically, an efficient device of this character is necessary in order to properly protect the chandelier from lnjury.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A concavo-convex smokebell for gasburners, consisting of the body A, apertures B B, and deflecting-shutters C C, one or more,
substantially as herein specified.
2. The combination, with the smoke-bell A provided with the apertures B and plates 0, one or more, of the deflecting-disks D D, substantially as herein specified.
3. The combination, with the smoke-bell A provided with the apertures D D and plates 0 C, one or more, of the conical deflector E, substantially as herein specified.
CHARLES DEAVS.
