GAS-BURNER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. BRAND, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Wheeling, county of Ohio, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to gas burners, and it has for its primary object to provide a gas burner of torch type in which gas and air'are so admixed as to produce combustion of a highly efficient heat-producing character.
A further object is to provide a gasburner nozzle, adapted for discharging the combustible mixture of gas and air, which is so formed as to prevent any tendency of the flame to blow out by reason of the discharging force or momentum of said mixture.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construc tion, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a top plan view of the invention; Fig. 9. is a longitudinal. section on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4c is a front end elevation of the invention.
Referring to said drawings, in which like designating characters distinguish like parts throughout the several viewsl indicates a common form of gas valve having a needle adjustment, the same having attached thereto an ordinary mixing bell 2 in one end of which is mounted a tube 3 which constitutes a mixing chamber for the gas and air admitted through said bell. Mounted upon the opposite end of said tube is a nozzle, designated generally by the numeral 4, consisting of a single piece of material, preferably cast metal. Said nozzle comprises a sleeve 5 which constitutes an attaching portion within which the end of said tube 3 is received, and a forwardly extending open body 6. Said body is of substantially clamshell shape, being substantially semi-cylindrical in form at its rear end and having its sides thence gradually flared outward and its bottom gradually inclined upward toward the front end, as shown in Figs. 1, 2v

A substantially upright vertical flange 7 is provided at the extreme front end of said body, the same constituting a baflle against which the burning gas is 'directed and by which the flame is deflected in an upward direction. The inclination or curvature of the bottom of the body 4 and said baflie, together, act to checkthe momentum of the gas and air discharged from the tube 3 and thus to prevent the extinguishment of the flame which would otherwise result.
Extending transversely across the body 4: from the top of one of its sides to the other at a suitable point intermediate the ends of said body is a bridge-like member 8 designed to form thereunder a passageway in which a current is created that draws therethrough much the greater portion of the gas and air discharged from the tube 3, so that practically all of the flame issues in an upward direction from the nozzle at a point close to the flange or baffle 7, or through the open space between bridge 8 and said baffle. Only a comparatively small portion of the gas passes over the top of the bridge, the open space between said bridge and the sleeve 5 serving to admit a further supply of air for mixing with the current of gas passing beneath said .bridge.
It will be noted that the bridge interposed between the ends of the body 4 constitutes an essential feature of the invention, as, when such bridge is not employed, a large proportion of the gas and air discharged from the tube 3 is directed in an upwardly inclined direction in which it does not engage the flange or baflie 7, and is consequently not retarded to the extent necessary to maintain the flame against extinguishment.
As is obvious, the mixing tube 3 and nozzle 4. may be cast in a single piece, if desired.
By employing the nozzle herein described, I attain the result commonly accomplished in furnaces by placing a wall or baflie plate in front of an open gas supply pipe or nozzle. Additionally, the spraying or splashing of the flame which is incident to the employment of such wall is avoided, and a blast of increased heating value, due to more perfect combustion, is obtained.
The nozzle is adapted to be employed singly, as shown in the drawing, or a plurality thereof may be employed in batteries, as in furnaces, with one or more mixers.
That I claim is- 1. A nozzle for gas burners comprising a body which is of substantially semi-cylindrical form at its rear end, having its bottom gradually inclined upward toward its front end and having its sides gradually flared outward toward said front end, a substantially upright baffle formed at said front end, and means disposed across said body intermediate its ends to form an inclosed passageway thereunder.
2. A nozzle for gas burners comprising a body which is of substantially semi-cylindrical form at its rear end, having its bottom gradually inclined upward toward its front end and having its sides gradually flared outward toward said front end, a substantially upright baffle formed at said front end, and a bridge member disposed across said body intermediate its ends.
3. A nozzle for gas burners comprising a sleeve, an open body portion of substantially clam-shell shape formed integral with said sleeve, an upright baflie provided at the front end of said body, and a bridge disposed transversely across the open side of said body intermediate the ends of the latter, the opening at the rear of said bridge constituting an air-intake passage.
4.. In a gas burner, the combination with a gas valve and a mixing bell, of a mixing tube connected to said bell, and a nozzle provided on said tube, said nozzle comprising a forwardly-flared substantially semi-cylindrical body terminated at its front end by a baffle, and means disposed transversely across said body intermediate its ends to form an underlying draft passage.
5. In a gas burner, the combination with a gas valve and a mixing bell, of a mixing tube connected to said bell, and a nozzle provided on said tube, said nozzle comprising a forwardly-flared substantially semi-cylin- A drical body terminated at its front end by a bafile, and a bridge disposed transversely across said body intermediate the ends of the latter.
