Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,388, dated March 18, 1879 application filed August 23, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PARTRICK J. CLARK, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Lantern, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to prevent disturbance of the flame by currents of air, and to keep the top of the lantern cool.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lantern. Fig. 2 is a plan of the burner with the top removed, and Fig. 3 is a plan View at the line 00 a: in larger size.

The band m does not prevent access of air to the flame, but cuts off cross-currents and sudden drafts, that would disturb the flame.

n is a perforated metal ring at the top of the globe k. 0 is the ornamental top plate, and p is a screw-knob, for tightening the parts after the globe is is inserted. q is a plate within the ring at, having a central opening, 7', for the heated air to pass through. I provide a raised rim or flange, 3, around the opening, which prevents the air that may come in at the openings in the ring at from driving down upon the flame.

t is a plate attached within the ring a above the plate q, so that there IS a space between plate t and the top 0, which space communicates with the outer air by openings in ring a. The plate t has the eflect of keeping the top 0 comparatively cool, as the heated air cannot come in contact with the top 0.

The improvements described may be applied to any form of lantern.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the globe 7c, of the perforated ring at, the top piece, 0, and the plates q t, the former having central aperture, 1', and flange s, as and for the purpose specified.
