Patented Jan. 7, 1873.

PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BEEBE, OF JERSEY CITY HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,631, dated January 7, 1,873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BEEBE, of J ersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps and Lanterns; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a top view of the apparatus in horizontal section, the section being indicated by a: w in Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to lamps and lanterns; and consists in a deflector arranged over the usual perforated top plate and perforated cap of the burner in such a manner as to direct a continuous current of air within the cap toward the burner, and divide such current of air from the air that passes up through the top plate and enters the perforated cap from its exterior. l
The letter A designates the body of a lamp,
and 13 its burner, which is secured in the middie of a perforated horizontal plate, 0, provided at its perimeter with a perforated curtain, D, which extends downward, and, when the bodyis screwed into the top of the lamp, rests at its lower edge on the outer margin of the lamp along the line E. The horizontal plate 0 is also provided at its perimeter with a rising flange, F, whose top is bent inward at two oppositeparts to form inside lugs G that engage peripherical lugs H, formed on the bottom rim of the globe I, so as to connect the globe with the lamp. The perforated top plate 0 is covered over next to the perforated burner-cap J by a solid ring, K, arranged in such a manner as to deflect the air which comes up through the plateO against the bottom of the deflector inward in a direction so that it will enter within the perforated cap near its bottom, to form a steady, continuous, and connected sheet or current of air upward, around, and against the burner. The air ascends through the perforations of the burner-cap and over the edge of said cap, so that it reaches the flame both inside the burner-eap under the deflector, and also outside over the deflector. A bail, Q, is attached to the cover by means of a strap, whose ends go into a slot in the cupola or coder, and are bent on the under side, as represented in the drawing; but this I do notclaim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The deflecting-plate K, arranged about the burner-cap J, in combination with the perforated plate (3, substantially as described.
2. The perforated plate 0 provided with the rising and inwardly-bent flange G to receive the globe I and with the perforated curtain D for supporting the whole upon the lamp, as shown, in combination with the solid deflectin g-plate K surrounding the perforated burner J, the whole arranged and operating substantially as described. i
