Description
J. S LESTER. Fender.
No. 207,362 Patented Aug. 27,1878.
fiayagf wzw p ATTORNEY N PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGION n C.
UNITED STATES PATENT JAMES S. LESTER, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO J. M. ELLIS,
SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENQER S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,862, dated August 27, 1878; application filed J une 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern: i "1' Be it known that I, JAMES S. LESTER, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton, and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders for Fire- Places and Stoves; and do hereby declare that the following is 'a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a fire-place or stove with a supply of air from the outside of the building; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 1s a cross-section of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing a modifi cation thereof.
A represents a fender or hearth-plate for fire-places, made of any desired shape. This fender or hearth-plate is formed underneath with a chamber, B, constructed by attaching a piece-of iron or other material, in the manner shown, or in any other suitable .or desirable manner. Into this chamber B is inserted a pipe, 0, which is to be so arranged that when the fender is in position said tube will communicate with the air outsideof the room. Through the top or other suitable part of the feuder ismade a series of perforation s, a a, in-
to the chamber B.
It will readily be seen that a current of air from the outside is furnished, which enters the room at a point between the occupants of the room and the fire,.for supplying the vacuum formed by the draft of the chimney, thereby giving a greater degree of heat n the room from the same fuel, and a heat that is more equally distributed.
In place of the chamber B the fender-bar D may be made of a pipe, with any suitable number of holes in its sides, top, or bottom, and its ends connected with pipes at the sides of the fire-place, which communicate with the air outside of the room. The same principle may be applied to furnishing air for a stove by means of suitable pipes. A damper is intended to be provided in all cases for regulating the flow of air.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
i A fenderior hearth-plate for fire-places provided with an air-chamber, having a series of outlets for the air and one or more inlets communicatin g with the air outside the room, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing have hereunto set my hand this 27th day May, 1878.
JAMES S. LESTER.
