VAPORIZERV SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,150, dated June 5, 1900.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H. VALENTINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chatham, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaporizers and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vaporizers,censers, and like devices used for such purposes as vaporizing, evaporating, volatilizing, or burning medicinal or other substances for medical, fumigating, or disinfecting purposes. Such apparatus are especially useful for vaporizing cresylic acid or vapo-cresolene in sick-rooms, and comprise a standard or frame, a small lamp or other heater connected thereto, a hotair or heating chamber above the heater, and a basin or vessel containing the substance to be heated*such, for example, as that shown in my Patent No. 323,547, dated August 4, 1885. My presentinvention provides certain improvements in apparatus of this character,
which will be hereinafter fully set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vaporizer embodying the preferred construction of my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a like View, the base and the vaporizer being in vertical axial section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a ring-shaped base or foot; B, an upright frame or standard carried thereby O, a small lamp or other heater carried by the base or connected thereto; D, a cup, basin, or other vessel containing the substance to be vaporized,
and E a heating-chamber between the cup and heater and consisting of an open-topped shell F above the frame B and an open-mouthed or fun nel-shaped shell Gbeneath the frame cornmunicating with the chamber and directing the heat from the heater therein.
As thus far described the parts are in general of well-known form and may be of any suitable construction. The base A is a hollow ornamented ring into which the lower part of the lamp fits when a lamp is used as a heater. When other styles of heaters are used, the base will be suitably connected thereto. The frame B may be any suitable frame extending from the standard to the vaporizing apparatus for carrying the latter the heater, traversed by a vertical hole I).
The cup D is a metal vessel or dish resting on the top of the shell F and closing the upper side of the heating-chamber E. The-shell F has cylindrical portions 0, outer apertures d, and downwardly-extending bottom 6, being carried on the arm H. The funnel G is carried by the arm H and has an apertu re f leading to the interior of the chamber E.
I will now describe the preferred form of each feature of improvement incident to my present invention.
The base A and standard B are detachably connected together by an improved connection I, formed by constructing the base with a face 9, preferably horizontal and traversed by a screw=hole h, and with an upwardly-extending face 1', leading from this face 9 towardtheupper edge j of the base, and with a notch in, preferablyV-shaped, extending from the face ito the upper edge of the base, and by forming the standard with a bottom face Z, seating on the face g, a side face m opposed to the like face i, a screwthreaded hole 71 in line with the hole h, and with the lug 0, preferably V-shaped and extending from the face m into and fitting the notch 70, and by employing a screw J, passing through the hole h and screwing into the hole a, to clamp the standard on the base, with the reciprocal faces of the parts in intimate engagement.
Another feature of improvement consists in forming the cup D with an overhanging guard K for protecting the contents of the cup and preventing spilling. This guard is preferably an upwardly-convexed ring fixed to the top of the cup by soldering itsflange p to the like flange q of the cup and having a central aperture 7' for the escape of the vapor. This aperture is preferably flanked by a curved flange s, and the edge of the top K is guarded by an upwardly and inwardly turned flange t. The flange tserves to catch and retain any of the contents of the cup which may by any means reach the outside of the cup.
To firmly locate the cup D on the shell F, I employ, in connection with the cylindrical upper wall of the shell, a downwardly and inwardly turned flange it, formed on the cup and snugly fitting the walls 0 of the shell.
To fasten the shell F to the frame, I construct the shell with a downwardly-extending and preferably-cylindrical flange r, fitting the hole I) in the frame and secured therein.
I preferably construct the funnel G with a tubular upwardly-extending neck L, rising from a shoulder 10, beneath the ring a, to and passing inwardly through and above the flange 'v, fitting the latter and having an outwardly swaged or bent upper end w, embracing the inner side of the bottom wall 6 of the shell F, holding the latter firmly against the ring a and also securely locking the apronor funnel in place. This makes a firm and durable attachment and avoids the use of solder.
My invention also provides an improved guard M for checking the flow of heat against the cup and distributing it within the chamber E. This guard is preferably adjustable and detachable or removable and is best con- 30 structed as a separate thimble N, of metal of inverted-cup shape, having a solid top y above the aperture f and beneath and protecting the most exposed part of the cup D, lateral openings .2 receiving the heat from its hollow interior and directing it laterally into the chamber E, a cylindrical neck ct" fitting the neck L of the apron and an outer flange or projection I) resting on the edge 00 of the neck L. This guard or cup can be removed or replaced and adjusted in the neck either by removing the cup D and grasping the thimble from above or by operating on the thimble through the aperture f from below.
In use the heat from the heater will be directed by the funnel through the aperture f into the chamber E and will act against the cup Dto vaporize its contents, the resulting vapors escaping through the mouth 0'. The cup will remain firmly seated by reason of the fit between its flange u and the shell F.

The parts may be ornamented or shaped as desired.
It will be seen that my invention provides improvements in Vaporizers and the like which can be advantageously availed of, and it will be understood that the invention can be availed of according to such modifications as circumstances or the judgment of those skilled in the art may dictate without departing from the spirit of the invention.

vaporizing vessel carried by said shell, and a heater below said shell, in combination with a guard M between said vessel and heater,
and locking both said shell and funnel to said frame. I

In Vaporizers and the like, a frame having an aperture, a shell anda funnel arranged on opposite sides of said frame, the one having a tubular vertical flange extending through and opening into said aperture, pass ing through the other and locking both said shell and funnel to said frame, said shell adapted to support a vaporizing vessel and form a heat-chamber below said vessel, and
an adjustable guard fitting said aperture and adjustable therein.
4. In vaporizers and the like, the combination with a vessel for containing the liquid to bevaporizcd and a heat-chamber located beneath said vessel provided with a central aperture through which the heat passes, of a perforated cup-shaped guard ext-ending into said heat-chamber and fitting said central aperture, and adjustable therein.
