G. S. GOODHART. VAPORIZER AND FUMIGATOR.
Patented Feb. 17, 1885.

GEORGE S. GOODHART, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
VAPORIZ ER AND FUMIGATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 812,459, dated February 17, 1885.
' Application filed July 30, 18534. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. Goonuanr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented anew and useful Fumigator and Vaporizer, of which the following is a specification.
The several letters refer to several parts throughout the several views.
My invention relates to improvements in fumigators or aporizers in which substances and compounds of medicinal properties are placed in a hemispherical metal retort. vaporized by heat from a spirit-lamp placed beneath it; and the object of my invention is, first, to ati'ord an easy and efficient method of introducing medicated vapor to diseased parts in the treatment of diseases known as catarrh, (nasal and aural,.) deatncss,lei1corrlioea,go1ioi'- rhea, cancerous and indolent ulcers, hemon rhoids, &c.; second, to generate vapor with the said fumigator, and by passing it through the rubber tube to render it sufficiently cool to force it, together with its medicated spray, into the throat in the treatment of the diseases known as croup, quinsy, and sore throat, 860. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a top view of the vaporizer or fumigator. Fi 2 is a side view of the entire fumigator. Fig. 3 is a vertical view of the retort.
The material used to create the smoke is put on a piece of isiuglass on the bottom of the oven or retort, (designated by the letters I) m h.) The top of the oven or retort,as designated by the letter h, is then attached to the main body of the fumigator, as represented in Fig. 2, by means of the clamps b b. The knob h is used as a handle with which to raise the top h of the oven or retort h. The rubber tubes f and g are then attached to the receiving-tube d and to the supply e,respectively. The spiritlamp a is then placed in position and lighted. The vapor or medicated spray as generated in the retort h is then forced by mean of the bulb f and the rubber tubef through thereceiving-tube (Z, the oven or retort h, the supply-tube e, and the rubber tube 9, which is provided with the usual nasal, aural, vaginal, &c., attachments to suit the particular treat went, into the diseased part.
I have mentioned the use of isinglass or mica 'on which to place the substance to be acted on; but this is not always necessary, for it will be observed that the pan h is very shallow. and that the inlet-pipe d enters near the bottom thereof, which will cause the blast of air from the inletpipe passing close to the bottom of the pan, and thus keep the material acted on in constant motion, so as to always present a new surface to the action of the heated bottom of the retort. This will be found to be very useful when herbs are used as the fumigating substance.
I am aware that prior to my invention fu inigators, as such, have been made. I do not therefore claim such a contrivance, broadly; but
hat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fumigator or vaporizer, the combination, with a lamp, ofa retort consisting of a shallow pan, as h, and domeh, said pan having inlet and outlet pipes d e, said inlet being connected to said pan near its bottom, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The retort It, provided with an annular flange, in combination with a detached cover, it, having a corresponding flange, means, as m, for preventing lateral motion, clasps b, attached to said cover on opposite sides and arranged to embrace the flanges of both parts and secure them together, substantially as shown.
GEORGE s. GOODHART.
