Araivr ERNEST NITZ, OF PHlLADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF y TO HENRY THOMSEN, OF SAME PLAGE.
MEDICAL INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,525, dated December 5, 1882. Application filed August 19l 1882. (No model.)
To all vwhom 'it' may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNESTKNITZ, a citizen of Bavaria, residing in the city and countyof Philadelphia, Slate ot' Pennsylvania, have in- 5 vented a new and useful Improvement in Medi cal Inhaling Apparatus, which improvement is fully set i'orth in the following specin'cation and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of the inhaling Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof, partly broken away.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of au exterior cylinder and an interior perforated cylinder, be-
tween which ice is introduced gfor cooling said interior cylinder, in combination with a receptacle for the medicament, which communicates withtheinteriorcylinder,andadischarge-pipe,
.fao whereby the vapor or volatile matters of the medicament may be cooled and inhaled in a pleasant and agreeable condition.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a closed cylinder, within which is secured a cyll inder, B, which is closed at top and bottoni,
and perforated near the top, as at c.
U repres'entsa medicament-receptacle, which is passed through the top of .the cylinder A and connected with the top of the cylinder B,
said top being perforated, as at Z1, at the place within the receptacle above said portion.
D represents a discharge-pipe, which leadsfrom the cylinder B and passes through thc wall of the cylinder, its outer end having attached to it a flexible tube, E, which is pro- 4o vided with a mouth or nose piece, F.
The operation is as follows: A quantity of ice is placed in the cylinder A, so as to occupy a portion of the lower space between the two cylinders A B, the impert'orate part of thev cylinder B preventing the melted ice o'r water 45 from entering 'the cylinder B. Access is had to the cylinder A by means of the removable top of the saine, or a chute or other inlet formed in said top or side ot' the cylinder. The
cap or cover ot' the receptacle is renioved and 5 the receptacle supplied with the medicament in a warm or hot state, the cap then being re-A applied. lhe piece F is now fitted tothe mouth or nose, and the patient. inhales through the same. The vapor, volatile matters, odor, doc., 55
ofthe medicament are drawn into the cylinder B, where they unite with the cool air,` and thus pass through the tube E into the system.
ltvwill be seen that while the vapor, duf., are
evolved vfrom warmed or heated medicaments, 6o
the temperature of the vapor is` reduced, whereby it is made serviceable and pleasant, thus avoiding the disagreeable administering ot'- warm or hot vapor, and increasing the benelicial effect upon the patient, the temperature 6,5
closed cylinder having its upper part perf'o- 75 rated and its lower part imperl'orate, the medicament-receptacle communicating with said inclosed cylinder, and a discharge-pipe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ERNEST N ITZ.
