. VAPOR PAGE BATH.
Patented 16, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I-IARRIET H. HOGE, PORTLAND, OREGON.
VAPOR FACE-BATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,758, dated October 16, 1894.
Application tiled August 24, 1898. Renewed September 24,1894. Serial No. 523,986. (No model.)
To all whom I? may concern: v
Beit known that I, HARRIET H. HOGE, a citi zen of the United States, residing atPortland, Multnomah county, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vapor Face-Baths, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, as a part hereof.
My invention relates to contrivances adapted to be used as a hot vapor bath for the face, or for inhaling hot medicated vapors.
To derive any beneficial results from either operation it is desirable that the bath be en' dured, or the inhalation continued for a considerable length of time; but if the patient is compelled to breathe the hot vapors these soon become so stifling that it is impossible to stand it for any great length of time. I therefore conceived the idea of providing the bath with an air-duct, through which the patient will be supplied with fresh air from the exterior of thebath, which, while in no way interfering with the medicinal benefits to be derived from the bath, would enable the patient to endure lthe hot vapors for a longer time, and thus obtain greater benefits therefrom. With this object in view I have constructed an apparatus as shown in said accompanying drawings, in which` Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention, illustrating the manner ofusing the same and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
The reference letters designate the parts referred to.
My apparatus may be made of sheet metal, and I prefer to construct the same in two sec' tions A, A', the' latter being a receptacle for the hot Water, and the former being intended to receive the head.
When using the bath the two iiaps, b, project over the patients shoulders oneachside of the face and help to support a covering thrown over the patients head so as to inclose the vapors, the front edge of the covering resting on the shield, d, care being taken to leave the funnel or mouth, e, of the tube, or airduct, f, uncovered. The said air-ductf leads from the exterior to the interior of my' apparatus, and the same may consist of a fun,- nel e, secured in the front wall of the upper sectionA, a rubber, or other flexible tube f, attached to the inside end of such funnel, and a mouth-piece f ,provided for the convenience of the patient, he holding the same in his mouth when using my apparatus as a face bath. The mouth of the funnel may also be provided with'some means as a piece of silk, linen, or sieve of iine mesh, to ilter the air entering through said air-duct.
Both of the sections, A, A', are adapted to be put together, the rim of the lower section,
the interior of said case A, said air-duct being provided with a iiexible tube and suitable mouth piece, attached to its interior end, and with means for iltering `the air entering through it, and the said receptacle and upper case being respectively adapted to be put together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. y
