UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SUMNER HAMILTON GUYOT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NASAL 'RESPI RATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,580, dated July 9, 1889.
Application filed November 24, 1888. Serial No. 291,757. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SUMNER HAMILTON GUYOT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nasal Respirators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 is an elevation, of one form of my device. Fig. 8 is a plan, and Fig. 4 an elevation, of another form of my device; and Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation, on line 5 5 of Fig. 3, of that form of my device shown in Figs. 3 and 4:.
I11 each view the parts are greatly enlarged for greater clearness.
The object of myinvention is to produce a respirator which is readily bent into different shapesto fit diiferently-shaped nostrils; and my invention is arespirator made up of a bow provided at each end with one or more shields made of a number of rings secured together.
In Figs. 1 and 2, a is the bow, and a the shields, each shield being made up of a number of rings Z, secured together and shaped, as shown, to fit closely against the walls of the nostril when the device is in use. It is frequently necessary to alter the shape of one or both shields, and for this reason I form the shields ofa number of rin gs, so that the shields are readily squeezed or bent into the desired shape, each ring then yielding more or less, as desired.
In Fig. 3 each shield a is formed with a chamber a to receive a sponge or the like to prevent the inhalation of dust, and for this purpose I provide auxiliary shields a which are secured to shields a in such Wise as to leave a mouth at for each chamber a Both forms of my device are readily bent to fit the nostril of the patient, owing to the fact that the shields are made of a number of rings, and both forms keep the nostril fully distended when properly shaped and in place.
In practice I make my respirators of smallsized silver Wire.
What I claim is- The improved nasal respirator herein described, consisting of a how a, provided at each end with one or more shields a, made up of anumber of rings secured together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
SUMNER HAMILTON GUYOT.
