Description

UNITED STATES" Patented February 1 6, 1904.
PATENT Orricn.
- BREATH-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettrsPatenthl'o. 752,114, dated February 16, 1 04.
Application filed March 14, 1903.
like, the object being to provide'a guard to be worn over the nose and mouth to prevent the inhalation of the breath of a person affected with ,any contagious disease; and with this obiec't in view the invention consists, es-
sentially, in providing a hood of a size and shape capable of fitting over the-nose and month, said hood having straps or bands connected thereto and passing around the back of the head, where their ends are connected, said straps or bands havin g air-tubes arranged upon the exterior thereof; the forward endsof said tube projecting into ithe hood, where;
by a supply of air can be drawn from the rear of the person wearing the said guard.
The invention consists also in certain (l6? tails of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view showing the practical application of our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the guard ready for use. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view.
In constructing a guard in accordance with our invention We employ a hood-A,Which is preferably constructed of rubber "and has sufiicient rigidity to prevent collapsing during the breathing operations. This hood is of such size and shape that it will conveniently fit over the lower. end of the nose and extend a short distance below the lower lip, thereby completely enveloping the mouth and nostrils. Straps or hands B are connected to the hood at each side, said straps "or hands being of rubber or any other suitable material, said straps or hands being adapted to pass upwardly around the back of the head, as most Serial in. 147,780. on model.)
clearly shown in Fig. 1, and fastened at the rear, any suitable form of fastening device being provided. In the present construction we have shown an ordinary button and buttonhole; .but it is obvious that other fastening means may be employed. Each strip or band has an air-tube C arranged upon the exterior thereof, the rear ends of said tubes being arranged adjacent to the rear ends of the straps or hands and the forward ends of these tubes are projected into the opposite sides of the hood adjacent to the lower end thereof, as
most clearly shown at C in Fig. 2. x
In practice we prefer to construct the-entire device of rubber, and in such case the ale-tube C will be made integral with the bands or straps B, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3.
A guard constructed as herein shown and described would be of great benefit to doctors and barbers, and in case the wearer is com pelledto come in close contact with an unusually dangerous contagious disease a sponge or cloth saturated in a disinfectant solution may be arranged at the rear end of the guard over the entrance of the air-tube, so that the air which the operator breathes will be thoroughly disinfected.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A guard of the kind described comprising a hood formed of rubber and adapted to envelop the mouth and nostrils, straps or hands connected to theopposite sides of said hood and provided with fastening means at their rear ends, and the air-tubes arranged upon the exterior of said straps or hands, the rear ends of said air-tubes being arranged adjacentthe rear ends of the straps or bands and the forward ends extending into the hood at opposides thereof and adjacent to the lower end,
gaidhair-tubes and straps being integral as set ort LEONIDAS SENNETT. ABRAHAM L. MOORE. Witnesses:
